Spurrier Pulls Schollies

Is that good or bad, Vol67? For South Carolina's team I mean. IS he giving the schollies to better players?

“They told me I was doing so good, but that was obviously a lie,” he said. “At the beginning (of Spurrier’s tenure) he told us that the only way to lose your scholarship is by stealing, hitting a girl or breaking the law.

What about bad grades??

Man, it's a flash a minute in Columbia. What a circus. It will really be interesting come time for the season (If anybody's left to play...).

Do you think there's any way Visor Vic imagined all this stuff when he took the job? WOW!

What a shame for Spurrier, he had his work cut out for him just because of the school... Now he's got to deal with this. Holtz was a dirtball, not even a football genius like S.S. can save this sinking ship.

Maybe he's trying to collect scholarships for when he loses about 20 over 3 years.

If I were that kid I would be looking for a new school. Why sit around for 4 more years with a coach that obviously has a less than stellar opinion of him? It's not like a S.C. degree is anything special in the acedemic world. Sounds like he is a pretty good all around athelete that could get a ride somewhere in football or some other sport. Maybe that is what Coach Superior was trying to tell him.

Are the rules different for eligebility regarding non-scholarship student / atheletes? Would he still have to sit out a year if he transferred?

Brilliant move by Steve.

These are players who Steve obviously has had enough time to observe them and he has either concluded that they:

A. Aren't SEC material
B. Don't have the grades or won't have them
C. Don't figure into his plans and the scholarship could be better served on someone new.

This will give him flexibility to recruit above the number normally granted, even with the proposed cuts of 2 scholarships per year for the next 2 years.

Those cuts are based on all in-house scholarships and this cut will give him the leeway to recruit the next two years as if he hasn't lost any schollies.

Brilliant!

If Steve is pulling their scholly's because of not following rules, drugs, or grades....great

If he is doing it because they arent playing as great as he hoped, I think he is more of a dirtbag then usual

Sounds like he's planning a big run in the SEC, for 2010?

I cant see where this will benefit his recruiting effort.
Promise every kid a scholarship, get him to campus and JERK it!

He'll have all the kids and their parents just dying to get in SC.

If the kid isn't SEC material then I dont see a big deal here. Certainly cant blame a coach for putting together the best team he possibly can. You should expect this when a new coach arrives with a totally different game plan.

Absolutely right on!

This will soften the blow of losing 4 total schollarships and by eliminating players who shouldn't be there to begin with, Steve will have a full load of ships to offer the next 2 seasons.

Sometimes you have to have the courage to make the tough calls.

Steve certainly has that.
