STAFFORD POSTS HIGH WONDERLIC SCORE
Posted by Sheil Kapadia on March 22, 2009, 10:25 a.m. EDT
Georgia’s Matthew Stafford did not throw during the Scouting Combine, but he stood out among quarterbacks taking the Wonderlic test.

According to Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune, Stafford scored a 38.

The other top quarterback prospects fared well also. USC’s Mark Sanchez got 28 of the 50 questions correct, and Kansas State’s Josh Freeman nothced a 27.

Last year, Matt Ryan reportedly scored a 32, and Joe Flacco posted a 27.

Among receivers, Missouri’s Jeremy Maclin stood out with a 25. The other top prospects were not as impressive. Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree scored 15. Maryland’s Darrius Heyward-Bey posted a 14. Florida’s Percy Harvin a 12. And North Carolina’s Hakeem Nicks an 11.

At offensive tackle, Alabama’s Andre Smith scored 17.

Linebacker Rey Maualuga posted a 12, while his USC teammates fared better. Clay Matthews scored 27, and Brian Cushing 23.

At defensive back, Maryland’s Kevin Barnes posted a 41, while Western Michigan’s Louis Delmas scored 12.

Andre Smith scored a 17. He must have cheated.

Crap, I got a 2/10

But I took it in the Travis Henry mindset. None of the questions had "get it pregnant" as an answer.

I got 9/10...though I did just guess on the last one. I didn't feel like taking the time to do the math.
Is that seriously the questions they ask? How could any college student possibly get just 12 correct?

I've taken the actual wonderlic and the questions weren't nearly as easy as the ones the AJC asked.

Something doesn't seem right. I know the questions are supposed to be pretty easy b/c they are geared towards professional athletes, but it's also out of 50 points/questions and I'm pretty sure they a timed...and not graciously, possibly worse than the ACT's "you have less time (minutes) than there are questions" system

But this too seems more dumbed down than it should be...

That's a little hard to believe. Not saying that Stafford isn't a smart guy, it's just that his on field decisions and never have come off as exceptionally cerebral.

If that really is true then with his arm strength he's a mortal lock to be the first QB taken, and Mark Richt should be shot for not being able to win more games with that guy at QB.

The test isn't geared towards anyone. It is a generic test with several puzzle type problems, analogies and basic math that is timed.

The questions the AJC asked were incredibly easier.

I have also taken the test and didn't find it at all difficult. That being said, some people do well on this type of test and some don't. Instead of taking it as an absolute determination of one's intelligence, it should simply be used as one of the factors that are taken into consideration.
