Stanford Oline vs our Oline

With high expectations and hype comes high criticism, that's the way sports work bro! Corey Miller and Jacques Smith are 2 prime examples of hyped up, blue-chippers that have overwhelmingly underachieved. Why? Because they were expected to play like beasts!

It has been shocking to realize how much better a team like Stanford is than UT over, say, the last decade. I've watched a few of their games in recent years--their OL is indeed usually demonstrably better: They have guards and tackles who can move and pull and get outside and actually block people instead of lumbering around and then whiffing on a defender. They are ALWAYS a well-coached team. I like Butch but I'd taken any of the last three Stanford coaches first. Stanford usually has good QBs and good TEs, too.

Well, Ill take the next flight into Knoxville! You somehow, someway get me into that practice facility and I PROMISE you Ill do it and do it proudly!

Dude you always talk **** about this team. I've criticized the o-line my fair share of times, but there comes a point when you need to give it a rest.

Our O-line was signed to pass protect. Stanford's O-line for run blocking. Very big difference. Very rarely do you find lineman that are proficient at both. Each takes different skill sets.

i thought they did both very well.hogan had plenty of time when he did throw the ball.

Old habits like you... are hard to break
Blocks with someone new.. are so hard to make

And their recruitment several years ago was with Andrew Luck at QB so I am sure they didn't just decide to go after "run blockers" instead of "pass blockers".

I think some on this thread need to buy some Summer's Eve and take it home and use it!

Just shows again how overrated our oline is.

If we lined up with 7-8 offensive linemen and only ran power run plays like Stanford did....the results might have been different.

When Stanford lined up with 5 only....the results were not very good. Also Stanford broke Oregon's fight....Oregon's players looked beat and quit imho on several plays during that game...limp tackling on several run plays like us against Mizzu. Just my :twocents:

give cbj a chance to get his type of players on campus before you start a hire david shaw or greg roman thread.also.it will take more than 1 recruiting class to fix our problems.cbj inherited a bunch of bs from doolander.go vols.

Apparently you don't know what is all entailed in being an elite lineman. To pass protect, they have to have quick feet as well as good arm extension. To run block, they need to have explosion and power, and strong hands. Two very different techniques. Every lineman can not run block well or pass protect well.

It is amazing to me that posters would actually defend an O-line that has essentially started for two years while delivering the continuing worst losing record in UT history with ridiculously poor run blocking. The OP's point is simple. It is not hard to understand. But if you choose not to believe it or make excuses for the inferior play you have seen over the last several years - have at it. They are a figment of the media's imagination as the "best O-line in the SEC".

Dave Clawson certainly thought they were interchangable

Outside of Hamilton he's the second biggest reason were still debating if if 5-7 should be considered a successful season

Completely different blocking schemes and techniques.

Well it is safe to say our scheme and techniques necessary are not getting done by the current unit. Maybe we should try their scheme and techniques?

i'm not defending our o-line at all.do i think they should run block better.yes i do.they don't have that nasty attitude you need to run block.thats why i think it will get better when cbj gets his players in the fold.players that have confidence and are use to winning.

The diff is attitude and effort.

Absolutely. Stanford lost their mental focus and executed poorly against Utah. They executed near flawlessly against my alma mater last night and destroyed them.

David Shaw coaches a team filled with smart, dedicated young men, who are able to exploit weaker-minded players through ground-and-pound football.

It's amazing to me that posters would continually bash our team for any reason. Posts like these are not criticism, its just trolling and pathetic people who probably weren't even decent high school players.

Yeah because every time someone posts the truth, they are trolling. But when someone posts something that agrees with most of VN, it's just good criticism. Pathetic.
