Went to the game today, was proud of the LV's for storming back to make it a 2-pt game at 0:60. My thoughts for the day:
- We got killed on the back-side rebound, probably 15 pts went to Stanford on a miss from one big on one side of the basket, that went to the other big on the other side of the basket. And the reason is, we are not blocking out on defensive glass. LV's entire front line needs to work on boxing out.
- IMO, our best five, and most athletic, are Burdick, Harrison, Jones, Carter, and Massengale. Burdick and Carter need more PT, they are our best jump shooters. I like Simmon's competitiveness and energy, but bless her heart, she is not one of our top-5 players this year.
- Russell is improving by the minute, has soft hands, but seems to be a little flat-footed on defense, needs to work on her defensive rebounding.
- Refs were so one-sided it was ridiculous, the male ref called the game like a Stanford alum, worst call was the jump ball at 0:60 that was clearly UT's (Izzy?), that was a bush league call that allowed Stanford another possession.
- Play of the game was Stanford's 3-pt shot right before half, that was the dagger that made the difference in the end, no way she should have been open like that. I saw that girl in warmups hit about 10 3ptrs in a row!
- Maples is like a shoebox, very loud, obnoxious announcer ("too many steps", who needs to hear that?), and Stanford fans really get pumped up, especially with that cute dance cam routine.
- I saw Candice's senior year team lose out here few years ago, it's almost impossible to win in the shoebox arena with the bad refs and crowd noise. Give the LV's credit for hanging tough those last 3 minutes.

Stanford crowd was definitely in to it. Besides the cold shooting, we had no scheme for Ogwumike.

Can't agree about the officiating Volle. They missed calls on both sides and fouls were pretty even, 18 to 16. Not a good excuse for losing. The crowd was loud but polite. I've seen much worse. Agree with your other points though except Russell who had a bad game. Not an easy foe for a freshman.

Simmons must be benched. When is Warlick going to get it: She is not a big-time player. She shoots terribly in EVERY big game--5-18 tonight. That's typical of her. She doesn't have the confidence and toughness to shoot well in big games--and her funky shooting motion exacerbates the problem. She is the worst shooter on the team--and takes the most shots! You cannot play her--period. Massengale didn't shoot well either, and how does Burdick get 5 fouls in 15 minutes of play? She has to play more and be better.

I don't think Warlick has it either. If she can't see by now the problems that Simmons creates for this team, then she shouldn't be the head coach. The team has not played well against a good team since she took over--not once.

Maybe I'm wrong but shouldn't the held ball call in the last minute have resulted in a shot clock violation on Stanford? The shot clock was at :00 when this occurred and I thought the shot clock is not reset if the arrow favors the team who had possession when the held ball is called..

Anyway, IMHO there was a lot of home cookin' in this game...

I didn't see the play, but did the ball hit the rim? The play-by-play I was looking at said there was a missed lay-up.

I didn't think so but if that's the case it would explain why..I had to turn the volume down as the "announcers" were too much for me to bear...

Frankly its the same ole same ole lady vol's story. They can not design a game plan when
faced with a big post player, they shoot poorly from the ft line in big games and they normally don't get calls and our coach has taken a page from CM and just sits there on her big keester, with her mouth closed not getting after bad calls. We are a good team but far from great.

For all the Simmons hate, She is not the reason we lost this game. 3 point defense, rebounding, poor free throw shooting, and untimely turnovers is. Should Simmons slow down, and drive to the basket most of the time, yes. We don't value defense as much as we should and our post players, played soft yesterday, across the board. Chiney wanted the rebounds more. How many times am I going to see Harrison travel or bounce a ball off her foot. All these things are fixable.

I don't see it as Simmons hate. It's just reality. Vol fans are conditioned by the Tenn controlled press to think the LVs are super. Commentators are still talking about Simmons as an all american and Wade Trophy candidate. At this point it's ridiculous to be saying that. Any criticism is seen as treason instead of legitimate commentary. Everyone should read the discussion boards of other teams to get a dose of reality. The statement by one of the LVs, that Tennessee has hands down, the best front court in the nation was bulletin board material for competitors. She should have been benched for making that statement.

The talk about Chiney wanting it more is meaningless. She doesn't want it more, she's just more skilled than the opposing players. And, what do you think Harrison should do to stop bouncing the ball off her foot? People have limitations and sometimes there is nothing that can be done to improve as much as they might want to. Unfortunately, in the past, Tennessee's talent was at a higher level compared with other teams. Life must be lived in the present and erecting statues will not help the team.

Simmons is playing the wrong game and has been for four years. She has gotten a reputation as a three point shooter and has taken 680 and made 31 percent in her career. I can't think of another team especially the top teams that would let her take that many three point shots making only 31 percent. Simmons should be taking the ball to the basket getting fouled or drawing the defense for the pass to an open player. She should have been a one on one slasher not a three point shooter. Her game is speed and she has used it very seldom since she has been a Lady Vol.

Exactly. Drive and dish to the bigs.
