Starting rotation with Tidwell coming back?

Who gets dropped? This is actually insane how good our starting pitchers are.

No one gets dropped. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Until one of the current starters begin to struggle, you don’t mess with the momentum. Blade and Seth need to be bullpen guys to begin with anyway. In the postseason, when we need at least 4 starters, we will be in good shape.

Agree. They’re bullpen guys until the SEC Tournament.

I have a feeling we'll see Blade throw an inning in our mid-week game this week. Just to get his arm some reps. Then, we might see him get some action out of the bullpen in more high stress situations against Vandy. I doubt Tony throws Blade against an SEC team for his first pitches of the year. I could be wrong though....we'll see.

How good is Blade? Talk to me like I know nothing about baseball. No clue what an ERA is. All I know is we got a dude chucking it 104 and I think he should throw every ball until e says he can’t

Sewell has not been very good. Tidwell and Halvorsen will fill his spot... If any current starter struggles look to see them replace anyone of needed... Its a great problem to have

Beat me to it. I hate to badmouth any kid, but Sewell’s performance against Texas led to Tennessee’s lone loss after Burns had pitched a gem, and he nearly blew the game today. Blade and Halvorsen could be shut down guys in relief, replacing Sewell.

Tidwell has been regarded as a top 15 pick in the next draft, as a draft-eligible sophomore. He has a mid to upper 90s fastball and a mean cutter. Ended last year as our best pitcher. Joyce hasn’t worked his arm back enough from Tommy John to go long enough to be a starter. He’s a bullpen burner who could stretch it a few innings if needed. Probably a 1-2 inning guy this season. Throwing 100+mph for 5+ innings is a recipe for disaster IMO.

If Blade were in the majors, they would send him to AAA or AA and gradually bring him up to speed in progressively longer outings, limiting pitch count each time. Then they would give him a start or two and see how he does. If he does well, he comes back up and takes his place in the rotation, somewhere, because he was the ace of this staff before he got hurt. The bullpen guys have their assigned roles, and inertia wants to keep that more or less as is. Tidwell is a starter, and same is true there. After stretching him out, I would have him start the mid-week games and build his stamina, and be there in case one of our other starters gets hurt or performs poorly. Four games per week, four starters. Simple. Halvorsen will come along later, and by that time the landscape of available starters may or may not have changed. Play that one by ear.

Well, suppose you have
Bob Gibson
Sandy Koufax
Randy Johnson
Nolan Ryan
Roger Clemens

Which would you drop from your rotation if they are all in their Prime? Tough decision. You go by the lineup they would be facing.

I missed the shower window. 23-1. UVA lost to Wake Forest. Best record in college baseball I think. You deserve it.

This was extremely informative. Thank you.

It's gonna take awhile for Tidwell to build his stamina back up. Especially if he's only gonna get an inning or so at a time. I look for him to be fully ready by around the last series and SEC tournament. I'd take it fairly easy with him. No rush with Burns, Dollander, and Beam pitching extremely well. We could have 5 "ace" like pitchers on the staff for postseason play. That's gonna be huge. That's usually a teams biggest issue, they run out of starting pitching and end up using bullpen arms and they run out of arms.

I would find out which of those getting back were VERY capable of bull pen duty. I made the reference the other day to how the Braves used John Smoltz in that role for a while. Some can, some can't. When they are all 100% then you have another dilemma. Using the two returners too early might put too much pressure on the bullpen if they have to have short pitch counts while keeping starters on the bench. Long relief and mid week starts might be the best way to get them back to fully serviceable in the meantime.
