I don't really follow Vols players until they are playing at the college level but I'm wondering given all the hoopla about the general state of affairs where you folks see future recruiting efforts at the moment. My beloved Florida Gators seem on track to do well again next year,

though Texas is pounding us all in the early going.

I think most of us are resigned to the fact that UT is not going to get any/many blue chippers unless there is significant improvement this year. If that happens we will probably pick-up a few guys of the guys who actually wait until close to signing day to decide and we might get a couple of bandwagon guys who jump off someone else's ship like Michael Goggnas did to us last year. In the meantime, IMO we are doing about as well as can be expected. All our commits, except one 4*, have 3* ratings from Rivals so we are not quite down there with Vandy and Kentucky just yet. We will be in stiff competition for some of our best in-state talent with ND (Chris Donald, Harrison Smith and Golden Tate). I'm not sure who we're looking at out-of-state in the 4-5* category that we have a real good shot at now. Who wouldn't want Noel Devine though? Wow!

that's one of the more positive posts i've seen from you HB in a while regarding recruiting....

also, i agree with you....a lot of the fence riders that will comit closer to signing day are waiting to see a product on the feild...hopefully that product will sway a couple of the our way....

o/t that i think so far it's not terrible...early on we're about, as you said, as good as can be expected.

We are 23rd in the rankings right now according to Rivals (for whatever that is worth). How many of the 22 teams ahead of us had 5-6 seasons last year? For that very reason I think we are doing very solid. All the recruits we have are good. A couple could end up being great. But whats most important is that there are a number of great players who we are involved with and if we start this season off on the right foot and show good progress we should be in position to sign some of those players that would push this class back up into the top tier.

uh, I think the #23 ranking is how we finished with the '06 class. I'm not sure thay have started ranking classes, other than to say that Texas is kicking the living crap out of everyone else. I'm even hearing rumors that in 2010 the University of Texas may become the next NFL expansion franchise.

Haha, it does seem that way doesnt it. The amount of in-state talent makes such a HUGE difference.

Good one VHB. Yeah, Texas is going to be a force to reckon with for a long time. They just have that feel of going on the big run. The three teams that come to mind as having built some mini-dynasties over the last 20 years to me are Miami in the 80's, Nebraska right on their heels, and of course USC over the last few years. It will be interesting to see how SoCal responds to losing such premier talent. They had the #1 recruiting class this past year according to most. Be interesting to see how this year shapes up for them.

Texas will be in the mix for awhile, that is for sure. One thing to think about with Texas though is that up until this year their best recruiting year in recent memory was '02, Vince Young's class, and now those guys are gone for the most part. In the meantime, Oklahoma has had Top 10 recruiting classes year-in and year-out. Last year the Sooners definitely showed us the old "chokelahoma" spirit but they will definitely have the talent and the coaching to stand between Texas and undefeated seasons for the next few years. Add to that the annual A&M rivalry game, the possible resurgence of Nebraska in the Big12 North, and the Ohio St. game this year and I'm not so sure the Longhorns will have that easy of a row to hoe if they want to go back-to-back as BCS champs.
