I saw this on Yahoo this morning.

Of course, when you have more population, you're going to have more players.
Wish they broke it down to %'s.

no surprise here....all you guys that think we should go 10-2 or better every year need to go coach a 7-8 year old rec team and invite some 12 year olds to play....you're pathetic...maybe you'll win 8

North Carolina surprised me a little, with almost as many NFLers as Bama, SC, and Illinois. The absence of NY is a little odd, but I'm not sure how things work up there. It's tough to play football on concrete.
Yeah , bet they make the list for NBA players though.
I did not realize that Ohio was that high on the list.

Uh, you realize that NY is a big state with as much countryside as Tennessee, right? The whole thing isn't Manhattan!

I'm sure if you compared the number of NFL players to the number of NHL, hockey would win out.

.

Yes, I realize that. I also realize that the population advantage that the state has over the 47 it beats is because of NYC. The state has a population of what, 19 million people? Half of those are in the city proper. The NYC MSA has 19 million, although that includes parts of NJ that are too much trouble to separate out.

It explains why NY alone among the most populous states isn't as well represented in the NFL. The population is concentrated in a single area that doesn't produce as much football talent per capita. The concrete was a bit of artistic license coupled with my own hairbrained theory, but I think it is right.

Of course, Texas A&M has to compete w Texas, but there's still plenty of talent to go around there. So many recruits shouldn't be going to Oklahoma. Virginia is the only other school there that has legit in-state competition for recruits, but they also have higher admission standards. Rutgers and the state of New Jersey is an interesting situation - they also have high standards don't they?

A lot more people live OUTSIDE the city than in it....just saying.....NY is more of a basketball and hockey state anyway...I played HS football in upstate NY, it's just not that big of a deal.
