RT @BFQuinn: From KNS research desk (i.e. me on my couch), Tennessee has held 4 straight opponents to 60 points or less for the first time since 95-96

RT @BFQuinn: In those games, UT opponents (Oakland, Georgetown, UVA, Wichita State) shot 34.6 percent from the field, 19.6 percent on 3-pointers

Defense will always be there and it is something this team takes pride in. I believe getting our offense rolling and we would already be a top 25 team. Gotta keep it up.

The offense doesn't have to be great 65 points a night and we will win most nights. That's why I like the thought of running a little, getting 10 easy points off transition would be huge for this team.

That would be the KO era, a 14-15 team. They also held 12 straight teams to 65 or less, going 6-6 in that stretch.

A bit easier to work our way in with a couple more good wins.
Much better shape than last season at this point.
Now let's keep it goin!!!!!

Exactly. We win the next 3 and were sitting at 8-3 with a big match up against Memphis on the horizon. You win that and move to 9-3 and we are likely ranked to start SEC play.

Here's a stat for you.
That win jumped our rpi from 134 to 68.
RPI Forecast

0-8 Presbyterian is next. It'll probably fall back into the high 80's-low 90's no matter the outcome. Then comes 3-6 Western Carolina. Could be back near 100 before it really starts getting better.

Probably right.
A lot of big jumps early.
Later on it's harder to move the needle.

Makes Xavier and Memphis even more important wins.

Protecting home court in general will be important. Also important is winning some SEC road games. With the weighted credit the RPI gives road wins, they can really boost the RPI. Home losses have the same weight on the downside.

Also, there are 4 SEC teams with losing records right now. Those records are only going to get worse during conference play. And UT plays 2 of those 4 teams twice. Not good for RPI.

Hope you kept your clacalater from last season.
You were always right on end of season last year.

Presbyterian averages 59ppg, so it may very well be 5 in a row after tonight.

Impressive no matter how you spin it.

At this point last year, it was hard to say a good word about our defense. What a difference a year makes. I was very vocal about our paltry D over the first half of last season. I'm happy to say that players have bought in and really made defense a priority.

I remember your maiden campaign about how Pearl's defense was light years ahead of Martin.
How things have changed.
Wish we could do the same on offense.

Pearls' offenses struggled too, once Lofton and Smith left. If those 2 guys were on this team, we wouldn't be talking about Martin having offensive struggles either.

We had that debate last season. Chris taking it on the chin for his comments just stuck in my mind.
Wish we had a Lofton/Smith combo.

I'd settle for just one or the other. JaJuan Smith would be lights out on a CCM team. Great defender at all the back court positions, great rebounder for his size, and a good 3pt shooter.

I still stand by those comments too. Pearl's teams played a much different brand of defense. A defense that generated TOs and led to fast break baskets. Most that disagreed at the time, didn't care for the effectiveness of his halfcourt defense, but compared to the slop we saw through 10 or so games last season (routinely allowing opponents to shoot 45%+ from the field, causing very few TOs, etc), Pearl's was much more effective on the whole. This was true even in later seasons without Smith and Lofton.

Now I will admit that once CCM's first team bought into his brand of defense, they improved and that has carried over. Perhaps that is attributable to the adjustment to different coaching styles. At the time though, no one knew that.

I'm not wanting to turn this into another Pearl v Martin debate. Just making people aware of the comments you referenced. Good memory.

He would be the exact cure for what ails us this season, and last; a legitimate threat to shoot or drive from the perimeter. Maybe Hubbs is the solution going forward, but we could use a couple guys with that skill set. McBee doesn't fit, because he's no threat to do anything inside of 20 feet, so defenses can stay out on him should they choose.

The other thing is McBee has to work so hard to play defense, sometimes it looks like his tank is empty when they go to him on offense. JaJaun just made it all look effortless. Could play great defense on one end and then still get down the floor and score on the next possession. McRae can at times too when he has a mind to, and honestly he may grow into that. I am comparing a Jr (in McRae) to JaJaun as a senior.

If McRae plays the way he did last game the rest of the season we're in good shape, he was excellent.

He did carry the load for a while against WSU. I really think moving the big guys to the high post like they did against WSU plays to Golden's and McRae's strengths.
