LATROBE, Pa. ─ The Steeler Nation was officially introduced to its newest member today when the team announced the name of its new mascot at the club's training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.

Steely McBeam was the winning entry among more than 70,000 names submitted by Steelers fans around the world. He is a contemporized version of the former Steelers logo, a steelworker, representing Pittsburgh's rich history in the steel industry. The logo was used during the 1950s and '60s.

in fact it's kind of funny, they made the announcement of this mascot and the 75 year anniversary uni's eariler this year.

both were plainly rejected by the fan base.

the post gazette ran a poll last week, where 70% of Steeler fans actually said they said the Steelers had no use for a mascot.

not surprising, and the only thing i feel bad about here, is the poor guy they hired to dress up in this thing each week.

hopefully they'll keep his identity anonomys.......

The jersey's I can deal with- there a 60's throwback. Still I ain't crazy about them either. If they just have to mess with the jerseys I'd prefer they do a 75th anniversary in a Gold alternate style, with the old Gold helmets.

Steely McBeam- :bad: I hate that thing already.

We're the Steelers - We don't do cheerleaders and we don't do mascot's.
He:censored:!- we only need our logo on one side of our helmet!

i hate the yellow helmets. wait til those make a public appearance.....yikes. the steelers don't need to mess with what they have, period.

jake- on second thought- you're right- sorry I must have had a weak moment. They need to leave well enough alone.
However, I do wish they'd bring back the block lettering on their jerseys and get rid of that script crap they have now.

i've said the same thing about the block lettering, but i can live with what they have now.....it's still one of the best uni's in the league.
