I am a huge fan. Love them almost as much as the Gators (and probably would place them first with a bullet if they'd play 12 times a year on tv like Florida does). I caught them on their current tour down in Tampa. They were incredible. Just a tremendous bunch of musicians led by one of the best song-writing duos of all time in Fagan and Becker.

Just wondering if anyone else on here is also a fan.

Not sure I get the icon, USAF. In context, you could be signifying how hip I am that I am a Danfan. You could also be signifying boredom with the post, or the band, or me. I'm thinking its some function of the latter.

In the mid-70's (my mid-puberty), a guy told me that Steely Dan was better than ludes when it came to getting women.

While I ended up getting a lot more Steely Dan albums than women out of the advice, like it or not, he was right. As opposed to those generic brands, at one time Steely Dan on the stereo really could make you seem sexier than the average gawkish teenage male.

Anybody got a copy of "Walk it Like You Talk it"- Fagen-Becker's pre-Steely Dan EP? I've got a D & D character with +7 armor I'd be willing to trade as long as you don't mind Monks?

Oh my God that may be the funniest thing I have ever read !! There was an article I pulled up on them from a few years back, talking about how their fans are this legion of quirky smart folks that for some reason all just seem to "get" the Dan. With that post, Memphis, like it or not you are firmly in that camp.

:good!:

Hey USAF,
Are you excited about the season gearing up? I'm a little nervous. I worry that the Gators are VERY overrated because of the inexperience on offensive line and because of the brutal schedule. Don't tell anyone else, but I think UT is in a position that if they can rattle off three straight victories to start the season you could see a real turnaround from last year. Would not surprise me in the least to see UT in the SECCG.

Oh, I am very excited about this season. The gators are being hyped alot and there have been a few injuries as I've heard. They may snap under pressure, buy stock in kleenex if it happens because I've heard UM is prone to crying.

If we win our first three games, it would definately turn around what happened last year. Ainge and our OL scare the bejeesus out of me right now. Only time will tell.

Good luck, and stay off the pots:)

A little tidbit about Deacon Blues:

When asked about the line, "They call Alabama the Crimson Tide, they call me Deacon Blues, Donald Fagen told Rolling Stone magazine: "Walter and I had been working on that song at a house in Malibu. I played him that line, and he said, 'You mean it's like, 'They call these cracker a--holes this grandiose name like the Crimson Tide, and I'm this loser, so they call me this other grandiose name, Deacon Blues?' and I said 'Yeah!' He said, 'Cool, let's finish it.'"

I guess Bammers that know about this now hate Neil Young and Steely Dan!

Another interesting factoid perhaps more contemporary to the younger crowd on here would be that Fagan and Becker met in college. Chevy Chase played drums with them for a little while before they left and became songwriters with Jay and the Americans in NY.

I've seen that one many times before. One thing you have to know about these guys is that you take anything they say about the meaning behind their lyrics and immediately toss it out !! There are legions of their fans out there just reading so much stuff into what they do its ridiculous. So they have, in the decades since they started, almost made it a sport to mislead people, including their own fans!

I've seen other interviews with them where they say that the song Deacon Blues is just about a guy down on his luck who wants to do better in life and so they needed to offset that character with the penultimate in winning, which at that time was University of Alabama Crimson Tide and it just worked lyrically.

I favor that explanation more than one which is based on insulting a university for no good reason at all.

Yeah, if I hadn't dropped a bundle to see them and then party afterwards in Tampa, I might have travelled to see them again.

Fagan's voice was as strong as I have ever heard it and Becker was in total command. I really enjoyed myself and, although I am also a fan of the newer efforts, I had no problem with them playing stuff from Gaucho and Aja.

Who knows for sure but Aja came out in Sept. 77 so at best the song was written after th 1976 season. They won a National Championship in 1973 - I believe this was also the first year the team was integrated.

This might explain the "cracker-ahole" comments. I could easily see a couple of guys from NYC thinking it was nuts that college football was so exhalted, especially in a state with such a backwards reputation at the time.

In other words, I like this version :hi:

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying you are wrong. I'm just saying we will never know for sure and I like it that way, myself.

Thought this was funny

"Taking paragraphs from someone else’s novel is one thing, but being inspired by a song to write a screenplay or book is another. However, Owen Wilson says that he’d never heard of Steely Dan’s Cousin Dupree, which in turn would mean there was no possible way that he could have stolen the idea. Actually, it would be prude of me not to misquote Wilson. This is actually what he said:"

"I have never heard the song 'Cousin Dupree' and I don't even know who this gentleman, Mr. Steely Dan, is. I hope this helps to clear things up and I can get back to concentrating on my new movie, 'HEY 19.'
