Was watching the race and there was a poll about Tony making the chase next year as a driver of a Stewart Haas car.

60 something percent said he would.

So, is this really realistic. I mean, doesn't Haas have crap equipment?

I mean, Stewart is a good driver and all but that doesn't translate into a chase run for them.

Are there that many Tony homers out there that think he can race anything to the front every race with substandard equipment?

And when I mean "substandard" I am comparing them to Gibbs, Hendrick, Childress.

While I have no doubt Stewart can post better results than the current Haas drivers, a driver just cannot do but so much with inferior equipment in todays Cup racing. However, I don't expect their equipment to remain substandard with the sponsor dollars they should be able to attract.

Riggs and anyone that's driven in the 70 this year could do awful with Hendrick stuff. Still, Haas doesn't have anything close to Hendrick, RCR, JGR, or most of the teams in Nascar. With Stewart, Newman and potentially Truex this team will have a lot more resources and Hendrick will probably be extra nice with the stuff he lends Haas. I don't know if a Haas car is capable of making a chase run next year, but if there's one guy that can do it Stewart's certainly the guy for that. Within 3 years Haas should be right up there with the best of them each week

Tony is capable, the Hendrick motor in the car is capable, so I think it depends on how the team comes together and their ability to set the car up properly. I would love to see Tony get Darian Grubb from Hendrick to be his crew chief but he's probably under contract.

Im the biggest Tony fan there is and Im not so sure about the chase. Im sure he can win a few races but the chase is a stretch!

Although, last year alot of people thought Gibbs wasnt gonna do to well going to Toyota right away. So, you never know!

I'm a Tony homer and I'd have to say they will get a car or two in the last few spots. Like 615 said, just depends on the personel they can get in there. They could just as easily finish just outside the top 12 too.

Contracts seem to be only something to be negotiated out of in NASCAR these days.

Tony is a great driver but it's unrealistic thinking that he can transform Haas from second-tier to a championship team in just one season. If he does, great, more power to him,but realistically I just don't see it happening so soon.

Stewart might compete and sneak out a win or two on a restrictor plate track or a road coarse. He might even sneak out a win at a short track like Bristol or Martinsville, but I don't think he can make the chase. I hope he proves us all wrong and does though!

There is a better chance of UT winning the NC than Stewart making the Chase in 2009

I got you ok the first time, just giving MHO. I just might start pulling for Smoke once he becomes an underdog.

The first step to being successful is to surround yourself with championship caliber people. It appears Tony is accomplishing phase 1 alright.

Darien Grubb is the leading candidate to become Stewarts new crew chief... if this happens, Ill bet money Stewart makes the chase next year... I think Grubb is going to be a great crew chief

There will have to be a complete overhaul of the team cause they aren't even making the top 35 now. That overhaul will need to include attitude as much as anything. I remember when Morgan-McClure first started with GC Spencer as crew chief. He was so used to running second rate equipment, that when sponsor money finally came along, he still had that scrounger mindset. It wasn't until they hired Tony Glover that they had success. GC never could get away from a back marker team attitude.

In the races Riggs has run he has avraged a high 20 something finish but the 150 point penalty really hurt. It knocked him out of the top 35 and he missed 4 races. I don't know if a Stewart/Grubb combo can make a 15 place improvement but it can't hurt.

Should UT start getting the the trophy case ready?

Not trying to be a smart a$$. I can't believe that both cars are in the chase, but Stewart is the points leader.

Newman hasn't resurrected anything. He's been running well, but talk to me when he starts winning.
