They both use it for sure.
In the pure sense...

Conservatives/libertarians use fear in the sense that they warn people that "a government big enough to give you anything you want is a gov't big enough to take everything you have". They rightly promote being alert to threats to legitimate Constitutional rights and liberties.

Progressives use fear to motivate those who think they have a gripe to give gov't enough power to "fix it" in exchange for abandoning the Constitutional guarantee of the rights of ALL individuals.

The "right" uses fear because they don't want the light and optimism of freedom to disappear. The "left" uses it to cynically add to the central authority's control in the hands of political elites.

This would be hilarous if it wasn't for the fact that you are dead serious.

The left and right use fear for the same exact reasons; to win elections and push their agendas.

I don't see a need to present examples of the left doing it because you appear to be well versed on the subject.

I would, however, like to see how you would explain away the previous administration's use of fear to justify trampling of our civil liberties; or the way some on the right use fear to justify denying some the right to practice the religion of choice.

It's wrong no matter which side does it.

Wrong and extremely effective.

I am speaking generically from the operating philosophies... not about whether career politicians on either side can be trusted to tell the truth. Very few can.

If you are talking about using a special judge to approve wiretapping of suspected terrorists then while I am not completely comfortable with it... It is probably necessary with strict oversight from the judiciary and Congress. If you are talking about something else then I'd like more details. Obama has done or tried to do far more to violate our civil liberties in less than 2 years than the previous 3 or 4 administrations combined, ie: fairness doctrine, requirement to purchase insurance, arbitrary confiscation of the wealth of GM stockholders,...

I would also like an example of conservatives using fear to justify denying some the right to practice the religion of choice. And be specific about what is supposedly "feared". Are we talking about outlawing a particular religion? Has direct threats of violence been issued?

It sounds to me that you have a big problem with free speech but no problem with gov't thuggery.

It's wrong no matter which side does it.
No. Some things we are wise to fear and need to warn others about. There is nothing noble about watching someone get run over by a train because you don't want to invoke "fear" by yelling at them.

Big gov't, big business, big labor, big religion, big academia, or any other concentration of power in the hands of a relative few is a direct threat to freedom and security to be feared and held in suspicion.
