Subaru Outback

IMO Subaru is a good product. On the same line as Toyota and Honda just not as well known.

I had a Tribeca some years back. Good car. The negatives I had with it was that it was a 6 cylinder and I would only get about 18 mpg in the city. It also had a smaller tank so I'd be filling up about every 260-280 miles, less than once a week which tending to get on my nerves. Before I traded it in it had over 100k and mpg started dropping to about 15.

Subaru is a very good make. One of the highest retention rates in the industry.
We put over 200k on an outback legacy. Mrs drove it then the child drove it. Minimal issues (head gasket and hang bearing were the big pieces ) with standard maintenance it should be a good buy.

Any owners here. Opinions?
Looking at 2021 or 2022.
We bought a 2022 Outback Limited XT (?) - I think it’s XT. It has the turbo. We’re hoping it’s the last car we’ll ever own. I love it. Rides like a dream. No issues at all, although we’ve only had it since October (ordered in July)

I like the height of it. I don’t have to climb in and I don’t have to climb out. Ours also has all the “wake up idiot” gadgets, which I appreciate as I enter my doddering old age.

FYI, Subaru is part of the Toyota Group. Toyota is the largest shareholder at about 20%.

For good or bad, the Subaru Outback is almost the "official car" of the northern Colorado front range Mom.

From about Longmont until you start reaching the women who drive working ranch trucks near the Wyoming border, the Outbacks are thick up there and I'm told they handle the occasionally messy weather and keep the kids safe.

That's not meant as a "manhood dig" but an observation. Lots of folks in CO need and actually use a truck but have something like a Subie for the family that can handle a little weather.

I owned a 1986 Subaru DL wagon 5 fwd speed manual with hi-lo FWD. It had a flat 4-banger and got 25 mpg at highway speed in hi FWD. Though towing wasn't recommended, I had a hitch installed and towed a trailered 16-foot aluminum Bass Tracker without any problems. It had 230k miles on it in 1998, when a jackinape from Illinois ran a red light and crushed the front end. Insurance wouldn't pay to fix it, wanted to total the car. I negotiated a cash settlement and sold it to my longtime mechanic for $250. He spent half a year repairing it, drove it around himself for awhile, then sold it to a neighbor. Likely, it's still on the road, somewhere. Honestly, if that dipstick from Illinois hadn't smashed it, I might be driving it, still.

ive driven two.

95 was a tank.

08 had a list of issues that should have never happened. Had 30, 60, and 120K services done.

When I sold it, had just had a wheel bearing replaced, differentials serviced, front brakes done, and new tires put on. Subaru Corporate had to give me a $350 stipend bc the drive shaft had fallen out while I was on Interstate.

Subaru Master Tech told me then that there was not only a head gasket leak on left side, but above oil pan, but that also the opposing side wheel bearing needed replaced. Not only that but there was likely another head gasket leak on other side. Id already dumped in excess of $2500 on it. No way I was spending any more.

None of these things would deter me normally but, considering Im in my car 90% of the time. I had no choice, bought a CRV.

I dont care for it much at all, but it is a tank. Very few issues.

Have no personal experience with them, but my dad just bought one. A first cousin has one which led to his purchase.

Just a FWIW, We found the standard Subaru Outback engine underpowered. Consumer Reports and others say get the turbo.
We ended up buying a Lexus.
Love the turbo. And hearing a turbo growl in a Subaru is a bit unexpected. 🤪

Working in a body shop I don't like them. All the people that own them talk highly of them and say they would buy another if theirs totaled.

Sorry, I was not clear. We drove the basic version. I think the non-turbo version is underpowered.
My sister and husband have an Outback Turbo and forester. Two great cars.
It also did not help that the dealer tried to charge $5k more than the sticker price. I'm not real bright, but----

Right, I realized that you tried the basic. We did too, and I was saying nope 50 yards from the dealer.
