So how many other of the Vol faithful are like me and now regret having said Sumlin wasn't the answer when we hired Dooley? That Sumlin's offense would never work! That it was a Big 12 Gimmick and this is the SEC. All I know is I would much rather be a Vol with a gimmick offense that just beat the tar out of Alabama than a team that could very easily lose to Vandy and Kentucky and have three losing seasons in a row!

I never said anything bad about Sumlin but hindsight is 20/20. He's done an outstanding job BUT he also inherited a team that did pretty darn well last year minus a few losses where they fell apart. A&M also wants BADLY to prove itself in the SEC for several reasons. 1. They've wanted to be in the SEC for decades 2. They want to shut Texas and everyone else from their old conference up after they all said they'd be the SEC's whipping boy. A&M has always lived in Texas' shadow and they've been screwed monetarily and in other ways due to sharing the stage with them.

IOW, even without a good coach and Sumlin certainly looks like a very good coach -- A&M was highly motivated this year in a way few schools will ever be.

And Johnny Football wouldn't be playing for us. He backed out of his Oregon committment to stay closer to home not because of Sumlin.

Yup.

And our offense is fine. Our problem is defense.

But he's done a fine job at tamu.

A&M lost 6 games last year before sumlin was hired. In 1 year of learning his system they beat Bama.

At the time UT hired Dooley Sumlin had a grand total of two years as a head coach. At Houston.

There was ample reason to pass on that resume.

Sumlin wasn't and isn't the answer for UT as he is in Tx where he is entrenched. He was going to tx, ok or a & m.
You guys are being a little hard headed about it.

What makes you think that Sumlin could do what he's done at A&M here at UT with our roster? Their defense doesn't seem to be running aimlessly around the field like ours does.

I remember when we were reportedly down to Sumlin, Dooley and Cutcliffe. Sumlin was my favorite by far. He was the only coach among them with a demonstrated record to turn around a team in the doldrums, and have them beat teams like Texas Tech, when TT was ranked high.

What's bad is Hamilton chose Dooley largely because of this time with Saban. Big whoop. Sumlin was under Stoops for a long time.

It sucks to see what we got, when we could'a had a Sumlin (V8). :)

We got a QB who NFL analysts had among the top prospects projected to come out this year. Don't think QB would have been an issue under Sumlin. Bray is better than what he had at Houston, and he was able to win with him.

I'm as big a homer as the next guy, and think TB catches a bunch of **** he doesn't deserve, but Manziel is playing out of his gourd.

My question would be this. Is Sumlin a great coach who develops players, or does he have a great system that just needs parts and not great players?

It is it a system, will it develop players for the NFL? Is it not important to recruit players with the statement that you will have a chance here to be developed for the NFL?

I’m not trying to downgrade the man whatsoever, but is he a gimmick coach that will be figured out sometime in the future?

I don’t know the answers; these would just be my questions.

Sumlin would have crashed and burned here. He inherited a much better situation than Dooley did.
