The University of Tennessee announced today that Pat Summitt has agreed to a one-year extension to remain involved with the women's basketball program in her ongoing role as head coach emeritus.

With the University saying that the Athletic Program is going to have to pay it's own way, why are we doing this? I have relatives who have the same medical issues at Pat Summitt, but none of their companies are still paying their way. They told all my relatives that they could rely on retirement and their 401ks. I fail to see the difference here. We have a new ladies basketball coach. I believe it is time to move on. Enough is enough!

Pay her till she doesn't want it. UT ladies basketball would be irrelevant with out her. Possibly all of ladies basketball would.

Because it's the right thing to do!! Also, I believe Pat's presence helps to some degree with recruiting as the program continues it's transition from Pat to Holly. JMHO

edit.... Link to contract

You are ignorant if you truly believe this statement. She is the most famous person in her sport, and the university owes her for making our Women's BBall program arguably the greatest in the history of the sport. No one knows who your relatives are, nor did they know my Grandmother who just died of the disease.

Besides, they knocked her pay down from the 300k's to the 80k's. Does that make you happier?

Who did what, who didn't or doesn't do what is irrelevant, Pat Summitt is a UT trademark that will continue to create a positive image for both sports and education. The resources used to keep her here is a pittance compared to what it would take to build another image that is as strong as the one that she has given UT.

Emerita, not emeritus.

-a is feminine, -us is masculine.

So for instance, alumna is a female graduate, alumnus is a male graduate, alumnae is multiple female graduates, alumni is multiple male graduates OR multiple graduates, period.

* goes off to sulk with her Latin books *

Anyway, props to Pat, and props to whomever at UT has the sense to realize that recognizing an icon of the sport is the right (and smart) thing to do.
