HFCUTK - Butch Jones of Cincinnati.

My thoughts: Not sexy, definitely not my first second or third choice, but he’s 50-27 as a HC, won back to back Big East Coach of the year awards, and finished 1st in his division 4 years twice two times and last once. Also he is 2-1 vs. Charlie Strong for what that’s worth.

Bottom line He’s a winner. He’s been a HC for over 6 years. He has won at two different schools as HC. He coached under a proven championship level coach Brian Kelly. He has won multiple conference championships (i.e. done very well when playing against similar talent level teams). He has won at a BCS level school and won a BCS level conference. He is known as a player’s coach – the team will come to love him.

He is clearly much better than the Dooley hire. He is clearly much better than ANY coordinator hire (including the OC guy at the 49rs under Harbaugh everyone wanted yesterday). And he is better than hiring a HC from a non BCS level school with a similar record.

He MUST hire a great staff loaded with proven recruiters in the SEC. I 100% support him because he is the HC at the University of TN, and because he had the balls to take the job. Hell he wanted the job bad – he apparently wore an Orange tie to his interview. He ran away from a deal with Colorado once he heard TN was available. So I already like him for wanting this job and the huge challenge.

All that said – I am really pissed at Dave Hart, Jimmy Cheek and the rest of the Admin because they failed the known goals of this search. The first goal is always to hire someone that can coach players to play winning football. They may have done that. But there are dozens of available HC that could have met that simple criteria.

Hart/Cheek failed to succeed at the other key requirements in this hire. A huge one at TN (as opposed to say LSU, UGA, etc.) is hiring someone that is a proven recruiter. TN really needed someone with a national name so TN could start going back to national recruiting. They didn’t get that done. Plus he has little ties to southern recruiting (apparently some to florida).

Hart/ Cheek were also tasked with making a hire that would at least begin to unite a divided and bitter fan base. Most importantly, they were charged with hiring someone that would ignite the flames of HOPE back in the fan base. They needed to buy time for the next man to come in and build a winning team. They failed at this. It is unfair to Jones but the truth is if he doesn’t pull in a top 15 recruiting class in February, and then looses to Oregon, UF, and UGA, the fan base will abandon him by mid October. That was what you couldn’t have happen with this hire. You needed someone that could bring hope to get through 2013 without a bunch of empty seats midway through the season if things don’t go well. Now Jones must pull off a miracle and win one of those games, and/or recruit like a mad man in order to get that hope that is needed.

So I am 100% behind Jones, but I am pissed as hell at Cheek and Hart and the TN administration as a whole.

I couldn't agree more. I believe the Hart/Cheek admin really dropped the ball. They let the good opportunities slip away and I'm sure this wasn't a booster pull at all. He was never in play until the last few days. And I really think Hart made this hire out of desperation.

I never bought in to the conspiracy theories that Cheek and Hart (fans of Florida and Alabama) were deliberately trying to undermine UT--until now. The sheer incompetence of this coach search is so staggering, that it appears to be deliberate. Here's what we know from the media reports:

1) Hart never met with Gruden or Strong, and Cheek was the only one negotiating with Strong apparently.

2) Hart only made direct contact with Gruden's agent to confirm that he was not the focus of the search.

3) Hart/Cheek did not seriously go after or offer Patterson, Petersen, Stoops, Mora, Mullen, or even Gruden, it appears.

4) Hart apparently did nothing in the first two weeks of the search, then blundered his way forward to embarrass UT on the national stage.

I will support our new coach, but I'm disappointed and apprehensive about the future of UT football, and I suspect recruits will be too. Here's hoping for the best, and I hope we're wrong and Jones ends up being a good coach. One thing is clear though--Hart and Cheek have to go!

This is probably the best post I have seen today.

Thank you.

I agree completely. I can't be mad at a guy for wanting the job. I pray he can prove his worth. However, UT administration handled this whole situation terribly.

Hopefully the next coaching search will be sans Hart and Cheek. With that said, Jones has his work cut out for him taking what was once a proud Ship of the Line, UT Football, that is now essentially a derelict trawler taking on water and rebuilding from the keel up. Can you tell I'm in a nautical mood this a.m? Good luck and welcome to Coach Jones. :hi:

Jimmy Cheek is the main problem.. We've had two different AD's who's decisions leave you with that WTF?!??! Feeling... I think our problems are bigger than just the AD..

I personally like Jones, but am in the same boat. I support Butch, but am not happy with the way this whole search was handled.

Look, Arkansas pulled in a coach who has been to the Rose Bowl 3X and won the Big Ten. We pulled in the guy who was 2-1 against Louisville.

I don't believe that Hart did not meet with Strong himself--that would be bizarre.

If Jones & Co. aren't great recruiters--and find an offense that gives people problems in the way that Texas A&M with Sumlin and their spread did this year--then we will be looking for yet another coach in three years. Finding really good players, in this beast league, at a time when the program is down will be a HUGE challenge. But he's got to do it--and he'll have to //find a way// to win some SEC games in the first two years. If not, uh oh. Everybody thought A&M would stink, and yet Sumlin, with his offense and his QB surprised. They lost a lot of games, but gave a lot of SEC teams problems, beat bama and their freshman qb may win the heisman (for what that trophy is worth nowadays--not much). If Jones can do half as much in year one, we might get up off the mat.

The proof one way or the other on Jones will be his ability to pull in a good recruiting class for 2013. We will know soon enough. I sure hope he can pull it off. He needs to get a strong defensive coaching staff with great recruiters to attract the players we need.

I love the Tennessee Vols and will continue to support them as a fan for 50 years I have no hard feelings for Jones gosh I hope he really knows what he stepped into. (well I guess he did 6 years contract I guess he is smart in that sense) But Hart 3 strikes for you in my book!!! 1. Sal it was your boy (look as his contract ugh!!) if you had gotten us the right guy for Defensive Cord we wouldn't be in the shape we where in this year, Even though Dooley wasn't a great coach you set him up with that hire. 2. Pat Summitt I don't even have to say anything else with this statement we know what happen there. 3. This entire process what happen to the requirements you stated? For me 3 strikes you are out Hart. We will never really know the true story on any of the above so why should I trust you any further!! I am still a Vol fan and I hope Jones does well but Cheek and Hart your true colors have been shown.

Jones has his work cut out for him. Hart and Cheek put him in almost an impossible situation. He must assemble an great staff full of top notch recruiters, close big in Feb, and find a win one of the first three big games (Org, UF, or UGA). It can be done, but odds are against him. If he doesn't get these things done, i am affraid the fan base will abandon him by mid october.
