It was really discouraging to see Mizzou defensive backs wrap up Marquez North easily on several occasions by themselves, while when our DBs want to make a solo tackle, they get embarrassed by stiff arms more so than not. A main reason we get
abused by the screens is because most of our DBs simply cannot make a tackle by themselves. Sutton seems like the only one that can partially crash the play at the line of scrimmage. Their Rb's were waaaaay too fast for our linebackers. Only talent and speed from recruiting can prevent that from being a factor from years to come. I honestly think our team thinks they are faster than they really are. Most of the time they play poor leverage and get burned on the outside. I'm sick and tired of seeing simple tackles being missed that turn into a TD for the other team. And our D line has gotten man handled two weeks in a row. And they are the most senior unit on defense, which is unacceptable for veterans such as them. Our defense has no identity, were not a great pass defense, and were not a great run defense. Our only identity we had this year on defense was being a scrappy team that forces turnovers. And we really lost that edge the last couple weeks.
With that said, this defense is still 10x better than last years. It's just small issues like tackling and leverage that really kill defensive stops for them.

Other than OL we need to dedicate this recruiting class to defensive guys. If we do not improve that side of the ball we will never turn this program around. This is the worst defensive personnel we've ever had in UT history.

This is so true yet we still have posters blaming the defensive scheme. It is hard to scheme when you are out manned at nearly every position.

I think it is fair to question why are we still taking poor angles at this point in the season and if it is the player then put him on the bench and get some one in the game who wants to learn.

Virtually all of the defense is the same as last years unit who couldn't get their heads around the 3-4, who was 'the worst UT defense in the modern era'. It's not just about size and speed or the skill level they come in with. In the SEC, especially if you don't match up in speed, it's about constantly improving by being able to learn from your mistakes.

We keep seeing the same mistakes with the same players through different coaching staffs.

Until, CBJ is able to roll over the roster, expect more of the same, unless the whole team finds and keeps who they were against the Gamecocks.

don't you wish Butch could provide a true assessment of his current talent to us? I would love to be a fly on the wall in a coaches meeting wouldn't you?

The difference is in the cushion the DB's have to use. Since they are not as quick, and would get torched in a foot race, they start with a 10 yard cushion. When a quick screen is thrown, they have to close from a long way out. By the time they get to the ball carrier, one of the guys is getting blocked and the other one is matched 1 on 1 with the ball carrier. All it takes is a side step usually because the DB is usually in a full sprint to try to get to him. The cusion is a killer on the screen and on the stop routes. When we get better speed on the corners, we'll be able to get rid of that giant cushion, which will make a world of difference in terms of defending the screen and short passes.

I agree with what you are saying and was trying to make the point that it is not fair to blame the scheme this season. I have not seen us be out of position alot this year like we were last season. Sure we have had some bust but all teams do.

I also question why we are not seeing Jones or Williams in the backfield as they both were highly recruited.

Great point.

I think the big abundance of Jucos were taking in recruiting says a lot.

The slip screen to DGB showed the problems with our defense. The LB's took bad angles along with everyone else. That play as well as the 50yd pass with the WR wide open in the end zone camped out waiting on the pass, were very embarrassing.
