It's been a while since I have been in charge of setting up television for a tailgate. We are planning to use a phone with unlimited data and stream Directv. What is the easiest way to connect the iPhone to a television? Lightning to HDMI adapter, or casting somehow?

Without getting other devices involved, I think the lightning to hdmi adapter would be your best bet.

Find somebody with an AppleTV and screen mirror the stream.

I'd also make sure I had an HD Antenna as a backup in case the DirecTV plan doesn't work like you want. That'd at least get you the CBS game.

I’d use your phone as a WiFi hotspot and use a roku, chromecast, Apple TV, Xbox, Fire, etc.

If you need to stream directly to the phone then, as others mentioned, Apple TV screen mirroring from iPhone or the hdmi adapter, assuming those still exist

Not to mention cell service can be spotty around the stadium in high traffic areas.

I grabbed an antenna and am going to pick up a lightning -> HDMI adapter in the a.m. I wonder if Target or somewhere has a non-apple brand version for less than $60...

$60 is nuts but given you are in a time crunch you might be screwed. You can get an Amazon fire stick for much cheaper. Check your Craigslist and see if anyone is selling a roku or fire or something you can stream to.

Since I already steam using a fire stick anyway, its definitely the way I'd go for a tailgate setup.

In fact, @kiddiedoc you don't even need to subscribe to a skinny bundle. If you'll just go buy one at Best Buy, you can put it in a TV and it'll have the ESPN app. Then download CBS All Access where they'll stream the 330 game for free and you're set. Just use your iPhone hot spot as the network.

Cool thanks.

Update: a cheapo digital antenna got us a great view of Le Tigre destroying the field and enough of the Bama/A&M game to satisfy those with a football appetite.

Digital antenna is the best way to go. That or the DirectTV tailgater antenna (mostly for full-timer RV types). Those unlimited phone plans aren't truly unlimited and will throttle your bandwidth quickly in high traffic areas.
