“We’re Not Allowed to Hang Up”: The Harsh Reality of Working in Customer Service — ProPublica

An interesting read that leaves me with a few questions:
  • How the heck do people think they can be so abusive to people they don't know who didn't cause their problem in the first place?
  • Are there not regulations that allow employees to have bathroom breaks regardless of industry?
  • Why do so many companies see employees as chattel to burn through?
It's a decent read. It at least makes me appreciate the person on the other end of the line a bit more.

Man, I'm not buying this nonsense. Really? So now we have people working at home being victims? C'mon, @AshG. You can do better than this.

Interesting response. I never labelled them victims. They can always quit and get another job.

My wisdomy is how we have let ourselves get to the point where abusing employees is not an issue for so many people.

Get to the point?

You do realize there was a time when child labor laws and minimum wage and unemployment benefits didn’t even exist, right?

200 years ago if you didn’t like someone you just met them in the street and someone yelled draw. Now we just post mean stuff online.

I guess if we're going to decide stuff based on outdated ideals from the past, you should put down you're magic sorcery device that allows you to talk to other witches around the world so we can burn you at the stake.

We have CSR's at work. I've never heard a single story like this regarding employer abuse. I have also never seen more adults playing mobile games on their phone than that group of employees. Nor have I ever heard of some idiotic rule that you can't hang up no matter what. And honestly if you can't decide between listening to a guy jerk off and thinking you're going to lose a dime a dozen job, you are perfect for working in a call center.

This forum can't handle that discussion.

I think some people tend to be rude when they are not face to face while communicating with other individuals. It happens on VN all the time. I guarantee you more than half of the insults directed towards people over the phone or the internet would never be uttered if the intended target of the insult was standing in front of you. CSSRs have my respect. They have to put up with a lot of BS but a person knows what they are getting into when they take that type of job.

we don’t…..

Which is why draws are now illegal.

My point is society has advanced and not went backwards.

My wife worked in customer service for a company that bought credit card debt and it was the worst experience ever. Having 0 income from her side was better than her working there.
