I don't think the state of Tennessee is lacking in talent as much as I don't think the talent is actually hitting the field. It feels like much of the talent in the state is being over shadowed by the well to do families. Many guys don't even try out for teams because they feel they will never see any playing time. They don't want to be a bench warmer for people that shouldn't be on the field to begin with. I know a lot will get upset about this post, but many like I would have played but the coaches never showed any interest in finding talent. I was 6'4" 290 as a sophmore in high school and there was 4 or 5 more near my size and didn't play. Only one coach showed any interest and they fired him before the season started. Its to me not a lack of talent, just coaches not wanting to get off their but and finding it.

Tennessee isn't producing as much SEC talent GoVolsXtra

I thought some were discussing new programs for the development of athletes in TN and we should be seeing some better talent in the future. I don't know much about it but someone else on here may.

If I would have been your size as a sophomore in high school, they couldn't have kept me off of the field! I see your point though. For whatever reason, fewer kids are participating. Back in the day, some didn't play because they didn't like the coach and/or politics. Every generation says it, but I think SOME kids now are softer and more lazy.

6'4" 290...if you really wanted to play bad enough you should have beat up all the coaches and starters and then gone after theirr families and they would have gotten you on the field!

The gap in talent between a SEC caliber prospect and an average high school football player is huge. If you're that good, you'll play in high school. Not even the most brain-dead high school coach could keep you off the field. I don't think that coaches playing favorites is costing the state of Tennessee more high-level prospects. There's no doubt that there are guys in high school right now who should be starting, but aren't because of some idiot coach who is playing favorites. With that said, I doubt truly elite level players are riding the bench in favor of anyone.

Its not just football but basketball too ... i know a guy who had to move out of the county to make it able for his daughter to play basketball. She ended up going to college and playing.

I went to High School in Chattanooga and it was horrible there.
Our starting QB was 5'10 and a garbage passer. Our #2 QB was 6'3 220 and could run over you just as easy as he could throw the ball, but the starter had ties to our school.

I think a lot of our more talented players are going to different SEC schools because our program has been in such disarray. Always try out for any sport. That way if you do give 100 pct and don't make the team or don't get to start at least you put forth the effort . My oldest son his senior year never missed a practice not even three a days. He may have played one down all season but he was the only one on the team to receive a scholarship although it was academic. Kind of self-rewarding don't you think.

One of the biggest problems I see is a lack of player development. How many teams have real strength and conditioning coaches? Sure some have a coach or two on staff that has experience lifting weights, but how many schools have a coach that can properly design a program? Strength and conditioning programs need to have a strong science base to be effective and sadly most coaches in the state have no clue as to tapering, periodization, or the difference in fast and slow twitch fibers. Sure most coaches know what makes speed but how many of them really understand how to develop speed? So instead alot of coaches go by the we are going to work more than everybody which actually means we are going to work more than everybody else regardless of the negative effects our athletes will endure because they are ignorant. So they have kids out there doing nothing but bench press or doing an insane number of lifts a day (I personally have seen kids squat over 75 reps a day 3 times a week). It is ignorant and that is what is hurting a lot of athletes in TN.

And who goes to school to be a HS S+C coach? Nobody. Most schools could pay them what, 15K a year. 35 if they're lucky enough to find someone qualified to be a S+C coach, and PE.

His name is brandon rutherord .last night against sullivan east, he put kickoffs thru the back the end zone numerous times, all 7 kickoffs for touchbacks, 7 straight pats, and last year, he had 29 touchbacks as a jr, add to the misery of opposing coaches, this kids grandad is an old vol that played for neyland, kid grew up in knox area, dont let the kid visit the hokies.somebody get up here.p.s. hes also rated PRESEASON ALL STATE 5 A.

I watched a lot of the ESPNRise Kickoff Weekend this weekend and IMO, the best teams in Tennessee aren't as far behind several of those teams as they are made out to be. I was exetremely disappointed in the Good Counsel/St. Xavier's game on Sunday.

And you honestly believe that (^) is limited to TN? Cmon now.

Not limited to just tennessee, I am sure that there are a lot of places that don't have them. However, a lot of out of state schools have them. A lot of former teammates had s&c coaches in high school.
We had teachers that taught nothing but weightlifting in high school though. With a masters degree a s&c coach will make a lot more money teaching and coaching in high school than collegiately, and you would also be allowed to personal train thus more money especially in the summers. Collegiate coaches arent allowed to personal train if the student has desires to become a collegiate athlete. Its an NCAA violation. Unless you are at a big school and are the head of the s and c program you make peanuts.
