Does everyone remember back in 1998 when Coach Cut quit on the team right before the NC game.I keep hearing that the team quit when they left their helmets on the field. They might not play Saturday and what is different with them and Cut???It seems like everyone is going to welcome him back with open arms. I say let the players play if Cut is hired again. :dunno:

That's not an accurate comparison. Cutcliffe was forced to leave when he did due to him getting the Ole Miss job. What was he supposed to do, pass on his dream of being a head coach in the SEC and the 500% pay raise that went with it?? In a perfect world, he would have been able to stick around for the big game, but everybody wants a new coach in place ASAP so that they can recruit. If he hadn't left when he did, his window of opportunity would have closed.

The job wasn't going anywhere. They called and wanted him. He didn't call and say i want the job

Were you in on the negotiations or something?

Volman, you know as well as I do that whenever a coaching vacancy comes open the school wants to fill it so that there will be adequate time before Signing Day. Are you really going to ask us to believe that Cutcliffe wouldn't have stuck around to call the plays for the Fiesta Bowl if at all possible?

I think the Sports Animal said three players have been identified and one has been disciplined. There was a thought that the equipment managers picked up the helmets and walked off without catching the numbers on them.

I come down in between you guys' positions- though GAVie gets more points for reason (even if my hearts with the man in flairs).

My biggest regret of our scapegoating of Sanders and the need to hire an OC is that I really, really, really liked being pissed at Cutcliffe over his (nearly) Doug Dickie-esque abandonment at a crucial time. Now, given how big a stick up his COACH that COACH has when it comes to his O plan, I've got to welcome Cut because he at least can handle COACH.

I don't care how rational Cut's timing was- though I disagree Ole Miss would have looked elsewhere immediately- I don't think he handled it well. Not as bad as Dickie doing the same the night before a bowl against the team he's leaving for, but it was pretty badly played. He could've waited until after the SECCG, then announced he was going to UM after the season, but until 1/4 he was absolutely and 100% still a Vol. Instead, he left us flat, as if the job was all that mattered and loyalty wasn't something practical people valued in the real world.

I've also got to toss in that Cutcliffe was being loudly complained about by Vol fans not only before 1998, but all through the '98 season. Why? Because, not realizing how much Fulmer was interfering with O play-calling and the playbook- we blamed him for exactly the same things we've been mistakenly blaming Sanders for ever since.

All that's going to change under Cut is that he won't be as manhandled by Fulmer. And that won't make any difference unless Fulmer allows new ideas to enter his- thereby Cut's- head. We'll still be a team that gets its mental leadership from on the field or (Trooper notwithstanding) nowhere....

thats probly the worst point of view i have ever heard. Cut left so that he could go start his own program. thats a little different than leaving your equipment out on the field like a damn baby!
