Alabama senator calls teacher pay raises unbiblical, defends raise for legislators | al.com

But McGill supports the 62 percent pay increase the legislature gave itself in 2007 because means lawmakers are now less susceptible to taking bribes, the paper reported.

Regarding teacher pay, McGill said: "It's a Biblical principle. If you double a teacher's pay scale, you'll attract people who aren't called to teach. To go in and raise someone's child for eight hours a day, or many people's children for eight hours a day, requires a calling. It better be a calling in your life. I know I wouldn't want to do it, OK?"

all righty then

Well at least he will think about it a little harder now before he accepts a bribe.

Per the Bible there is only one calling and that is for a preacher.

This your state senator volinbham ?

He's one of the state senators - not sure if he reps my area or not. Come to think of it, I don't have much of a clue about how our legislature works (or doesn't)

In typical Alabama fashion, the reaction to "bribery" was to impose crazy "ethics" rules where "nobody can pay for nothing" for any state employee. As a professor at a state university I can get in trouble if some company that has interests in state contracts buys me dinner. The reporting requirements are completely absurd.

Some of my colleagues were at Barber Motorsports Park for a meeting and the host of the meeting provided "rides" in the Porsche Driving Experience cars with the driving school instructors - basically a couple hot laps around the track with a professional driver. Most declined because it could be deemed "influence buying" under our "ethics" rules.

Way to go Alabama!

I believe in a creator, consider myself most closely aligned with Deism but don't go to church - am I religious?

There's nothing about me that's special.
That was a poor attempt at humor. The truth is when people say stupid shiz like that it makes people like me look bad.
Yes I Know, I don't need any help making myself look bad.

You mad at me Latile?
