I agree. The team is playing well. The offense is getting better, and the defense remains strong. It was a strange night: We play average teams and can't hit the side of a barn. We were supposedly playing the best defensive team in the country tonight and A&M didn't bother us much at all: we made good decisions, passed the ball well and made more than half of our shots for the night. Tonight, everyone seemed in their comfort zone, for the most part.
Graves is still holding back this team offensively (though not so much tonight given how well everyone else played.) She will surprise by making a shot now and then from outside, or a good pass, but by and large she remains very tentative when she gets the ball at the foul line or in the paint; one can see her nervousness with kicking in. If you are open, Graves, take the shot. She is always hesitating and holding the ball too long, which you can't do when you are inside. And she has this terrible habit of bending over and trying to protect it. You don't need to protect the ball if you act decisively--either shoot it, dribble it or pass it; but don't stand there holding it. If I were Warlick, the next time we play a relatively easy opponent, I would order Graves to shoot the ball 10 times. She needs to stop worrying about missing a shot or making a mistake and just do it. She is frustrating to watch because she is big and athletic--and plays very hard--but just isn't assertive with the ball.
