Owls Take Tennessee to School
Submitted by Jim Boofer on December 13, 2008 - 1:54pm.
Tennessee teams under Bruce Pearl have been able to dictate the tempo and force the opposition into turnovers that led to easy baskets on a consistent basis.
This year however has been a much different story. Today, Temple dictated to Tennessee how the game was going to be played. With a combination of well timed on ball screens, and a magnificent high-low game, the Owls exposed Tennessees inability to effectively switch defensively.
Tennessee defenders were beaten off the dribble on numerous occasions and watched from behind as the driver either drove for a lay-up or dished it off to a player in position to take an easy shot after coming off of a screen.
With 13:00 to go in the game the Vols cut the lead to five and looked to be making a run reminiscent of previous Pearl coached teams, but on the in bound pass Temple threw a long pass over the pressing defense for a lay-up that seemed to take the steam out of the Vols.
With 10:43 left to go Bruce Pearl was hit with a technical foul following a traveling call on Tennessees Wayne Chism. Last year it was just what the Vols needed during a road game at Xavier, but today it didnt matter.
When a team is hitting the bulls eye like the Owls were today, nothing was going to help. Temple shot 57% from the field.
Dionte Christmas and Ryan Brooks were magnificent for the Owls today and the Vols had no answer defensively. Temple repeatedly hit open shots from the perimeter and the paint, while the Vols struggled just to get a shot off, and few of those shots were un-contested.
Tennessee was confused and hesitant on offense all day long as a result of Temples switching defense that kept the Vols off balance from the opening tip.
Tennessee was taken to school by the Owls today, fortunately there are many more test to come this year for the Vols before the final grade is entered into the books.
