It's the offseason. The roster is set for the 2013-2014. Right now, we are just waiting for the schedule to get set and summer workouts to get going 100% of the way. As my favorite rapper Ab-Soul says, let's go on a tangent of random **** about this season and some thoughts on what has transpired.

1. It's interesting that we replace Trae Golden and his crazy departure with someone who is the polar opposite of him with Antonio Barton. I'd say considering the situation, the pickup of Barton was a great one. He's not going to provide the offensive pop that Golden did, but his defense will be twice what Golden was and that will help more than anything since the D was average last year. Also, Golden was a streaky shooter and Barton is a career 40% from deep. This will clear up space for Stokes and Maymon.

2. Speaking of Maymon, he's not yet 100% but hopes to be by August. I doubt he will see a 100% Maymon, but what UT needs from him his is rebounding and playmaking. McRae/Stokes/Hubbs will provide enough scoring to where Maymon won't have to play 30-35 minutes a night like he did in 2011-2012. If he can give you 20-25 minutes a night, you take it.

3. In terms of depth chart, the most important thing for UT is to find someone at the 4. Hubbs/Thompson/Moore will take the 1-3 spots. and Pops Ndiaye will get 10 minutes a game at the 5. So will Reese, Davis, or Chievous get the 4 spot? Reese provides shooting, Q provides defense and rebounding, and Davis provides length and athleticism. Q really came on late in the year, but I think Davis has a chance with his 6'8 frame and athleticism to really grab that spot and get 15 minutes a game.

4. Martin is going to have tons of defensive length on the perimeter. Barton is the shortest at 6'2, but has long arms. But look at the guards and every report on them is "long arms". I've been disappointed in the lack of forced turnovers since Coach Martin took over. I expect more gambles and playing hard in the passing lanes, which would lead to easier baskets and UT can use their guard athleticism (which they finally have) to push the pace.

5. Speaking of which, they need to run more and that is pretty obvious. You don't have to change your overall philosophy to get fastbreak points. With Hubbs/McRae/Richardson/Moore and the athletic 4's UT will have, you have to push the pace.

6. If you are looking for a breakout player, Armani Moore is going to take a leap. He's going to play and get minutes. He's a great energy guy and somebody who knows how to finish with his length and strength. I'm really interested to see how he develops and he is big enough at 6'5/205 to play some small ball four. He needs to work on that jumper to help stretch the D, but he's going to be a big time player in 2014-2015 season.

7. UT has so much guard depth this season and I'm curious to see how Martin is going to play it. McRae/Richardson both averaged around 30 minutes last year and you know Barton is going to get 25-30 minutes. But with Hubbs/Moore/Thompson (all three being capable SEC players) UT is going to have a lot of options. Will McRae play backup point to give Hubbs 20 minutes? Will Moore take over the backup 3 & 4 spot? How advanced his Thompson and can he play the 1 if Barton gets hurt? I'll be interested to read the reports come August/September.

8. I still am not convinced Pops Ndiaye is going to be the answer, but he's going to have to be because UT doesn't have anyone else at the center spot at his current moment. Stokes has a tendency to get in foul trouble and since it doesn't seem like Maymon will ever be 100% again, you can't run him for 35 minutes in a game. Can Pops play 15 minutes effectively (something that Yemi could not do) and give UT solid minutes? That's going to be the question. He's more athletic than Yemi, but he can give UT a shot blocker?

9. I think Stokes is going to have a 16/10 year. In SEC play, he averaged about 14/11 and really took over games at stretches. He got doubled team and if Maymon returns, Jarnell is going to get easier buckets. I would love to see him get some transition buckets this year and I really think he can have an All-American type year. I'd love Jarnell to get some more time in the high post so he can show his passing ability.

10. Last season was last season. UT is going to have a good year if they are healthy and make the tourney. The question is...what's the ceiling? I'd say pretty high. Barton just has to be steady and I think he can. UT's wings are talented, athletic, and experienced. UT will have more scoring options and the addition of Barton on defense will mean immense improvement. I'm already excited for November and counting down the days. We got about 150 to go.

Go Vols!!!!! :hi:

Have a feeling this season will be a special one. Hope the bus has room for a lot of bandwagon fans, because they will be trying to jump on board as the season goes.

I'm with you - this season could be special. Anything can happen in the NCAA tournament, but I think we have the talent and experience to make a deep run.

Great point, completely agree with this one. I'm glad someone pointed this out, I think Armani Moore will be leading this team come his junior/senior year. Keep your eye on Quinton Chevious too.

Overall, good write up I always look forward to what you have to say .

Nice post, OP. I pretty much agree with all your thoughts. Barton hasn't signed as he is taking 3 on line courses needed to pass to graduate from Memphis. According to him, everything looks good to be finished by the end of July, but I still hold my breath a little until the signature is on the official document. Huge pick up under the circumstances. Would hate for something to happen at the 11th hour. Not being negative, just cautious. I can do the worrying for all of us though.

We're going to have so many more options this year, it may take some time for everything to settle out, and we get a rotation established. Nice problem to have. I'm looking forward to this season. If the stars align, no new injuries, Maymon gets to about 85 - 90% of his former self, and stays healthy, this could be a very special year.

Great write up Z, just a few of my thoughts:

1. On Barton, I'm excited to see what Martin can do with "his kind" of PG. Martin made it known to barton that he hasn't had a "toughness" in his PG that he desires. Barton let Martin know that will never be an issue with him. He may not average double digit Ppg, but he will more than make up for the difference with his defense IMO.

2. I think 20-25 minutes is about the best we can hope for with Maymon, because of this we will likely see alot of 4 guard lineups, or alot of Davis.

3. Which goes right into #3, I agree, I think Davis is going to have a solid year.

4. Because of this length will Martin play more zone? The opportunity is definitely there, but reports I've seen are Martin is actually looking more towards building on that full court trap we saw some of now that he has the athletes. Will be something to watch for sure.

5. Agree 100%

6. Moore supposedly has really worked on his shot and was hitting the 3 ball on his trip to the Dominican this summer. IIRC he hit 6 treys in one of their final games while there.

7. I think Richardaon and mainly Moore will see minutes at the 4 spot quite a bit. Early reports are Thompson is surprising coaches with his vision, and fundamentals, they are very pleased with how he looks.

8. I think you may see:

Maymon 15/ Davis 15/ Moore 10
Stokes 30/ Maymon 10

I think Pops will se similar minutes to Yemi 5-8 minutes some games and 0 the next.

9. If Jarnell dunks the close one (less missed layups), and can shoot 70% from the ft line, he will definitely average at least 16 & 10.

10. I think it's gonna be a great year, can't wait, GBO!

**cant do a write up without mentioning the stud freshman. Hubbs has been as advertised according to the staff, they're blown away by the athleticism and range of his shot, I expect a few breakout games, but overall a solid freshman season.**

I am already on it now we are going to make at least a elite 8 run, not sweet 16, thats to low shot for the stars as many as there is up there you might hit one.:dance2:

I expect this team to win anywhere from 22 to 25 games. The SEC will be much stronger, especially at the top, than last season. If that weren't the case i would say UT would have a shot to only lose 3 or 4 conference games.

The only question mark with this team is how quickly they can gel, and what kind of depth is available in the front court. If UT can find an answer to both those concerns then we have the chance to see a special season. Like final four special.

Not saying we will go that far, because given the rowdy nature of the tourney anything can happen. But I believe that the way this team in constructed they can be the better team in almost every game they play next year.

Martin has mentioned a couple of times in pressers changes in the offense.
Heard any specifics?

Nah not really, biggest thing I've heard is looking to press and push more...but that's more defense creating offense than a different offensive philosophy.

I think having a PG he trusts may improve the offense some.

Buddy if #6 is right, he will be one heck of a secret weapon. With his ability to slash, an outside shot would make him a heck of a player.

Good post Z. Your 4th point cannot be overstated enough, especially in regards to creating TOs. I have been harping on this from the start of the Martin era. This team has the personnel, size, & length to be very disruptive defensively, particularly at the 1, 2, 3 spots.

One thing I really like about Cofer.
Constantly in the passing lane, tipping, altering shots ,blocking....
If you get a chance watch his Upson tape.
Tips one then, grabs it, outlet pass and then goes down court in front of the guard to receive the pass for a score.
