Tennessee v Memphis 2008 is on ESPN Classic if anyone wants to revisit some good memories.

Good for some people, not so good for others. :) Seriously though, that was a great game even if Memphis lost. Tennessee was the only school to beat us that year other than Kansas in the National Championship.

I was just about to post a thread about this as well. This is by far my favorite game in the Pearl era. We get down early to the number one team in the nation and the team doesn't quit. Pearl had a fire in his eyes, I guess because of the "rivalry" with Calipari. This game also makes me realize how much I miss the scrappy players like Lofton and JaJuan. And man, could they shoot. This game was the most intense I've ever seen Tennessee play.

So were your UT/Memphis alter egos fighting during this game considering you had kids go to each school? :p

yup. All this negativity on the basketball team sucks and it feels nice to take a step back and watch a game I know we won that shouldn't have won :)

Awesome night.

Along with clinching the SEC championship a week or two later, the highpoint of my Tennessee basketball watching life.

Well, to keep peace in the family we respect the fact that each has their own team and we are polite about it. It helped that it was a close game. As the Dad, I try to support them both, but they know that since we (the family) have always lived in Memphis and I have always followed the Tigers that I am only pretending to be neutral.

I have never believed that pulling for one team is the same as hating another. Even if it is a team you have a long standing rivalry with and they generally beat you, they become a standard for you to measure yourself against and beating them is a goal to accomplish. Sometimes, even if it only rarely, you pull it off and take down the big dog!! I am afraid I taught my family that having a team you pull for is about having fun and not to make it life and death so your world crashes in if you don't win. I hated Memphis losing to Tenn back in 08 and losing our #1 ranking, but I was proud of the fact that both #1 and #2 were for a time in the state of Tennessee.

It was a good year for basketball in Tennessee that year. Aside from Memphis and UT, I believe Vandy made the tournament that year...I don't feel like looking it up but I think they made it and got bounced by Siena. Austin Peay made it to the dance also. Not too shabby!
