Total Defense/Scoring Defense
UT = #109/106, 35.67
WVU = #107/114, 38.08
BU = #119/115, 38.17
Total Offense/Scoring Offense
UT = #19/23, 36.17
WVU = #8/7, 41.58
BU = #1/5, 44.08
Point differential:
UT = .5 point
WVU = 3.5 points
BU = 5.91 points
The point differential gives away the team's W/L records. So the conclusion is BU's D appears worse. However, their offense was so prolific that their defense stats are skewed due to total # of plays/possessions defensed. Yet it only finished 2.5 points behind UT's. For the season (excludes bowl games), Baylor ran 102 more offensive plays and defensed 77 more plays than UT. WVU defensed 30 more plays and ran 50 more offensive plays than UT. The final factor is the strength of schedule. Big 12 offenses are scoring machines and wide open. They have contain type defenses as a rule. SEC offenses are not as prolific since defenses are so strong. So UT giving up nearly as much in scoring as BU and WVU suggests that UT's defense was worse. But all three stink.
