Just thought I'd share a few #'s from an article written by Maurice Patton of the Tennessean.

How SEC states rank in population, total players on SEC football rosters, number of residents per SEC player, and players in the 2011 Rivals.com and Scout.com top 100.

Pop Rank/State/On SEC Rosters/People per player/Rivals/Scout

1/FL/153/121,163/20/15
2/GA/191/51,561/7/6
3/TN/81/77,731/1/1
4/AL/147/32,032/4/1
5/SC/47/97,047/2/3
6/LA/103/43,612/5/5
7/KY/44/98,048/1/1
8/MS/88/33,545/1/2
9/AR/57/50,692/1/1

I thought it was interesting to look at the #'s and it surprised me that Alabama and Mississippi produced the most SEC talent per person.

The entire article can be found here.

The only thing about this that surprises me is that Tennessee has the 3rd highest population, but clearly doesn't produce as much as talent as, say, Louisiana. If you look at Bama's roster, a huge majority of their kids come from Bama. Another good chunk come from Georgia and the rest are scattered.

Similarly, I looked at Texas's 2010 projected roster this morning. They have 99 players on the roster and 93 are from Texas!! Everyone talks about getting back into Georgia for recruiting purposes -- Texas is a damn gold mine. If we could pick up someone on our coaching staff who has in-roads in Texas high schools, that would huge for us.

TN is not 3rd in poplulation, we are 6th, just third one listed. If I am reading it right!

No.

Tennessee is 3rd in population with 6.2 million inhabitants. Next is Alabama with 4.7 million. That number was for total SEC players.

E. Loften? Nimitz, TX.

Not saying he's a bad player... but Rivals had him listed as #25 in Texas. I didn't even see if Texas offered him.

Actually, the 77,xxx number for TN was the rate that the state produces SEC players. There's one SEC player for every 77,xxx inhabitants.

It was actually surprising to me that TN produces talent at a higher rate per inhabitant than FL. Florida produces more players because of the vastly higher population.

TN is 3rd in population and 6th in rate of SEC talent produced. But Florida is 1st in population and 12th in rate of SEC talent produced. That contrast was interesting to me - and unexpected.

Saw a comparison of the number of black inhabitants in each state population a while back and it seems to give the best correlation to talent produced. (I absolutely mean nothing hateful in any way, shape or form by saying that. Just a fact that there are more black SEC players than other.) I think it would help to explain the Alabama/MS ranking. I also imagine that FL's population is unduly diluted with retired people, who generally don't make SEC football teams...lol. Think that might help to explain why their SEC player/inhabitant is high compared to even TN.

However, many players in Florida don't end up playing in the SEC. Lots of them go to ACC schools: FSU, Miami, Ga Tech, etc. It kind of makes this study misleading because that is the case for other schools as well, but all conferences attack that Florida talent pool.

for whatever reason people of african american heritage are better overall athletes than people of caucasion heritage. tennessee's population is more caucasion by percentage than most of those other states. facts are facts.

During his time at LSU and La. Tech, Dooley built in-roads into both TX and LA...give it time.

Texas shyed away because of grades.. they don't need to offer kids that won't make it...
