This comment at the end of the story made me smile. :)

QUOTE OF THE DAY: From Gruden, on the speculation that defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin may join his son Lane at Tennessee. "I'm getting a lot of hate mail from Gators fans, so I'm not going to say another word about it. I deal with that at the end of the season."

If I'm a junior in h.s., a defensive lineman I'm in can't wait mode to explode next year hoping to catch the new recruitin coach's eye.

Ya know, some are giving Lane a bad wrap, saying he was hired for his Dad. But it was his dad that probably got him in to the game and in to coaching to begin with. I have heard he was hired for his father and little else. But it does not add up to me. College coaching is much different that pro coaching. You have to be able to recruit, relate to the youngsters of the day. Lane has already said all positions are open. This is the SAME thing that Saban and Carroll have done. Why? It brings in the best when they know they have a chance to compete. We have all watched as Crompton, or Foster , who have waited their turn and got a chance, and what happened? Crompton wasn't the best QB on staff and Foster wasn't the best RB on staff. Opening up competition brings in the best when you are at a school that has TV coverage. (a lot of these guys looking to play now could go to D2 schools and die there). Yes. Monte gives instant credibilty. Kids wanting to go to the NFL can learn the game (d game anyway), from the best. A pro style offense from a former NFL coach is a good choice. UT is now in the perfect position for recruiting. I am excitied about next year but more so about 2010. It may take a year to get some to buy in to his play now if you are good enough attitude.
Playing a bunch of youngsters can hurt the first year, but then in the second year, they are seasoned and only 19-20. (ala Saban) that is how you build a dynasty. imo

I think he was hired because he could put an unbeatable staff together (which his dad will be part of), and that's key to being a good headcoach (ask Fulmer).

I am sure Phil understands that now....But Phil's DC was ranked 5th at the end of this year.

I wasn't dissin' Fulmer, but I realize now it sounded like it.

I didn't mean to sound like you were. i was probably one of the last fulmerite's. His keeping Sanders a year or two too long and the entire Clawson thing did him in.
He is devoted to his coaches, but we fan's are devoted to the University.

But I am still a Fulmer fan... as well as Chavis. I wish nothing but good for them ...

His last two o-line coaching hires also contributed to his demise. Adkins and Stevens are both bad o-line coaches. A good o-line coach might have made Sanders look half decent or at least allowed him to ease into the assignment. He looked pretty good when Marrone was the o-line coach.
