NBA legend Danny Ainge predicted TN to be a "final four" team and said that Bruce's program is a good "stepping stone to the NBA because it shows off the potential of the players he coaches"...Pearl may have built an NBA factory in one year at TN. The speed by which he develops his players is crazy! In one summer he took a group of hard working but less than stellar players talent wise and has developed them into a final four type of team. Any NBA bound recruit out of high school would be silly not to choose Pearl's program to strut his stuff before the NBA. Pearl knows how to squeeze every last drop of NARANJA out of his players. He's like a makeover specialist, a recruit comes in looking like your big sister and leaves in one year looking like Lebron James. Who wouda thunk it, in one year TBA became the new catwalk for the NBA....NARANJA!!!!

Wow. Talk about overreaching ...

Let's see what happens as the year progresses and on into the next few seasons before you annoint yourselves the NBA stepping stone.

Let's not get crazy here... when did Danny Ainge become the college basketball guru?

This year has been great and has already exceeded expectations, but I want to see how the Vols do next year without guys like Watson and Patterson. If this year is any indication, I'd say pretty well...

I'm guessing that Ainge's comment was intended to point out that the Pearl style of play tends to highlight the kind of qualities that an NBA scout looks for.
Don't think he was calling the Vols an NBA farm team just yet.

But it sounds good to me, and if that notion will help with recruiting I'm all for it.

CJ will be a big loss in terms of having a true pg. We will have some outstanding talent coming in and still one scholly left for a PG.

I don't know if Pearl's system will flourish with the kind of player who wants to use UT to get to the NBA. It is a pretty wide open game but it also must function as a team to work. So many of the "top" recruits just don't appreciate teamwork.

Actually, the man does know a lot about basketball. You do know who he is don't you?

Like OW=H said, he wasn't saying that our program is a stepping stone. Just that Pearl's system is very revealing as to what the players can do.

C'mon LG, you have to treat Danny Ainge's comment with SOME sort of respect. The man knows NBA basketball. Think about what a recruit will take away from that one little comment. That will be invaluable on the recruiting trail for guys that want to make it to the next level.

BTW, its not the Vols that said this, its Danny Ainge. We didn't annoint ourselves as anything.

I just think TBVol went a little overboard on extrapolating Ainge's comment, is all. I agree with above posters who say that Pearl does let the kids play loose and showcase their individual styles, which lately is what the NBA is all about (honestly, why not just make the NBA a 2-on-2 game?). I'm just saying, easy does it.

Ernie Grunfield another NBA biggie is hot on Pearl also..he's the one who recommended UT take Pearl...I know it doesn't make sense for Pearl to be so miraculously successful, especially if your a Florida fan or anally fixated..but hey, its NARANJA!...WINNING La Vida Loco!

Not the styles, the abilities. You make it sound like this is a selfish Tennessee team. It's far from it.

LOL, okey doke TBALL. Like Pearl said last night to the players, let's try to act like we've been here before.

Danny Ainge is very credible. His background speaks volumes.I do think he may be reaching a tad bit too far though.

Look, I am the first one to say that Pealr has done wonders with this team. They are fired up and ready to play and they believe they can beat anybody. He has maximized the talent he has, and it turns out maybe he has a bit more than anyone thought heading into the season. But Ainge is obviously looking to hand out compliments in that situation and he was impressed, just like everyone else has been so far. Just saying let's keep things in perspective, that's all.

I think its great, I really do. I am rooting for you in every game you play except against Florida and at some point also probably have to be against you if Florida can take over the SECE. But other than that, I'm a Vols fan because, like I said earlier, I love the underdog in the NCAA tournament. It is what makes it so fun.

Heck, at this rate, you won't be the underdog until the Elite 8!

Just had to point out the facts! How do the Vols compete with any state year in and year out in any sport when our population pales in comparison.

I enjoy your posts immensely LG!
You say all the right things, and then you give the cocktail a little "stir".
You really do have a flair for this.... :shades:

Maybe Danny was just trying to give our recruiting a boost or maybe he is kissing a little a$$ for Eric!

Some would view it as a job. I look upon it as a privilege ...

Come on, it'll be the Final 4 at the earliest. Then, even if it's Dook, at worst a pick-em.

Well, if you are going to go out on a limb, go WAY out, right utvolpj?

Call me an eternal optimist. :D

I just wouldn't bet against this team ever. I just like seeing that Pearl has his guys playing for the name on the front of their jersey rather than the one on the back. If they go to the NBA then great, but it doesn't seem to be the reason they are playing. I hope Pearl never lets it turn into that.

Exactly. I've seen the scenario about, oh, eighty million times at Florida. And don't think you are immune just because Pearl has them playing well as a team right now. When the NBA agents get their hands on these kids over the summer, they screw them all up. Just the way it is.

Heck, look at Florida right now. We start four sophomores and a junior. You think they will all be back next year? When some greedy SOB gets ahold of them and tells them they are guaranteed $1 million just to get drafted? And even if they do come back, after all the hype and attention, you think 21 year olds looking at that kind of sudden unbelievable wealth will all just want to come back and sacrifice an ACL for their alma mater?

I know exactly who he is, but he's saw Tennessee play one time.
