Hmmm?

Associated Press- Knoxville, Tenn.

Tennessee's driving certificates for illegal immigrants isn't valid as a form
of ID, but people are paying hundreds of dollars on the black market and traveling hundreds of miles to get one.
Tennesse has issued more than 51,000 certificates since it became the first state to offer them in July 2004, but not every certificate has gone to someone living there.
Two major federal arrests in recent months exposed shuttles bringing South and Central American immigrants from as far away as New Jersey to state licensing centers in Knoxville, where the immigrants got certificates using fake residency papers.
Last week, a third sweep revealed an alleged conspiricay in which prosecutors say state license examiners in Murfreesboro, outside Nashville, accepted bribes to provide illegal immigrants with driver's licenses and certificates without testing.

:banghead: :bad: :gun: :nono: :shakehead:

In the above cases, if state or county employees were doing this, then I think they should be fired. This constitutes "FRAUD." What does one deserve when they commit fraud? Maybe some jail time and a fine. Say 20 years and at least $50K fine. Is that enough?

How about getting Immigration to build a detention facility in Knoxville and start shuttling them back home by flying out of Knoxville... the epidemic needs to end sometime.

WOW, good thing you don't live out here! :biggrin2: j/k I needed to learn some Spanish just to read building signs.

But seriously, a large part of our economy depends on immigrants getting certain jobs done. I live in one of, if not the, fastest growing cities in the country. Much of it is being done on the backs of the Mexican immigrant. For the most part they are a very honest, hard-working group. However, many are paid under the table as day-laborers and still use the resources that I pay for every month (highways, FREE health care). That is why I was glad to hear Pres. Bush mention the guest worker program in his speech again. We will never eliminate the issue so we need to come up with better ways to control it. This will help fix our porous borders and may shut that nut job Fox up for a little while. Just my :twocents:

CNN showed a pick up truck pulling into a gas station and them fighting for who can get in the truck. I don't mind them coming in legally and working. They're hard workers and usually go back home to live the good life. Hell it's Mexico's greatest industry right now. My problem is with the illegal part. And with the employers who hire them off the books. They're defrauding the government and the rest of us. They use our services but don't pay into it like the rest of us. Let them all pay in and the tax burden decreases. But of course if they pay in, the costs of wages for them goes up and the employers are back to square one.

Too many people in this country are making too much money off of those illegals. Until the employers are punished, you won't see much of a change.

OK, many are here to help their families back in Mexico. There are many Western-Union type places out here just for that. The issue is not really that they are working here but how to get them to pay for the services they comsume.

They do not take up a larger portion of most jail than any other group. Their ratio of population to inmate is in line with most others and lower in most states.

There are many types of ethnic gangs in this country. There are Asian, Cuban, black, white, etc. Most are involved with types of crime. To single out a whole race of people based on the actions of a few is very small-minded.

You can't make generalizations based on a small sample of the population. I am surrounded by this daily and see many immigrants who are just trying to provide a better life for their families and loved ones. I can say that, put in the same situation, I would do the exact same thing.

My opinions on it are not racially based... I don't care where you are from or who you are, there are LEGAL ways to enter the United States, and if you are willing to use those avenues, I'm happy to welcome you.

Comming into the country illegally shows that you have no respect for the laws of the land...

Employing them says the same thing. In all of this patriotic attitude we have nowadays, I find it sad that there are those who sell out and break the law and cheat the rest of the tax payers.

Historically, most of our ancestors did not get here "legally". They just showed up. If I were a contruction laborer, nursery worker, fast food employee, etc. I would probably be pissed because the illegal immigrants have depressed wages for a lot of unskilled labor positions. Of course, anyone who was raised in this country in recent times had full access to a free education that is more than sufficient to allow you to elevate yourself above the unskilled labor market. So, IMO the people with crappy jobs really have no one to blame but theirselves. Personally, I think the guest worker program would be great because we get a better idea of who is coming into the country. The flow of cheap labor will stop when there is no longer a demand for it. Simple economics.

well said. As long as there are jobs middle class americans won't do, and most of the standing US forces outside the US.... the'll be immigrants who'll work 70 hrs a week at 5 bucks an hour pouring over the border like a line at the free buffet. This is the issue our president faces, do I shut down the border to pacify those who put me in office?...or do I allow them in under a blind big brother eye and support the needed but unsavory part of the economy that calls for low paid wokers to do jobs that need to be done but don't pay well enough to attract the middle class? We can't have it both ways...well maybe we can, and will till the next election....Then it'll be someone else fault.

Clamp down the borders and let those in that qualify and as long as the market has a need. That way they are documented, they can be tracked coming and going, they can be tagged if commiting crimes, and they can pay into the system like the rest of us. All is legal, we get those jobs filled, our borders aren't porous for criminals and terrorists, we get the tax revenues, etc. Why won't it happen? The boys running things don't want an end to cheap labor and money not checked by the IRS.

Give those jobs to the homeless roaming downtown Knoxville. I'm sure many of them are tired of sleeping under bridges.

Many of those people are not going to work no matter what. A lot of them have serious mental problems and no real access to mental health providers. Many others are alcoholics and drug addicts in the last stages of their diseases and won't live very long.

Not anymore. You pretty much have to be on WIC or SSI, and I've even heard of some people on SSI who were disenrolled. They have cut TennCare back to the bare minimum of what is required under the Medicaid program in order for the state to continue getting Federal $$.

The simple fact is that the US cannot continue to allow people into the country at the current pace for much longer. Overpopulation affects everything. Lindsey Grant does a good job summarizing the effects of overpopulation in his book Too Many People. If you are interested, the full text of the book can be found here.
