According to Yahoo, in 1996 Tennessee was the 5th most dangerous state to live in. Nevada was #1. What happened? Did we get a lot of refugees from Katrina?:p

considering Hurricane Katrina happened in 2005, I doubt there was a lot of hurricane refugees in TN in 1996.

i think that pretty much says it.

by the way, overseas, you should try harder to veil your prejudices, there is no room for it here.

Thank you, that was a sad shot. BTW, most "refugees" went to Houston and that town sucked even before they got there.

Considering that the city of N.O. lost about 400,000 residents that are now somewhere else makes it a valid question.

Add to that the sharp increase in crime in the areas that received groups of refugees such as Houston, Dallas and even Detroit does not indicate that there are any prejudices to veil.

There were doctors, police officers, admin clerks as well as criminals on welfare that have not returned to N.O. and never will, so any increase in criminal activity due to displace criminal elements is likely a permanent situation.

But...it wasn't a valid question because of the year in question.

It's only a debate because the OP made an error thinking that in 1996 Tennessee was a dangerous place to live because of all the Hurricane Katrina refugees.

I doubt 2006 crime statisitcs have been released yet and probably won't be until next year. the OP never quoted a source other than yahoo (which could mean some old yahoo on a street corner somewhere).

here is an actual source, using 2005 crime statistics.

City Crime Rankings by Population Group

Knoxville is nowhere to be found in either the 25 safest or 25 most dangerous. Memphis, Jackson and Nashville are mentioned however.

....doh! I did a search for cities...although Knoxville is 297th out of the 371 cities listed in the Morgan Quitno survey. New Orleans wasn't listed because it's PD didn't release crime statistics (I wonder why).

here are the state rankings:

http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0922223.html

Tennessee is in the top 10, it's 2006 rank is 1 spot lower than it's 2005 rank, further confirming the case against the OP.

as I said, take Memphis out of the equation...

Take Nashville out of the equation and the average IQ in the state rises 15 points. Also, the number of mullets falls to a statistically insignificant number.
At least I can walk the streets without worrying about having my throat cut for a $10 bill. I've never said Nashville is the greatest city on earth but it's a heck of a lot cleaner, safer and more civil than Memphis.

Nashville is one of the least civil cities on the planet. It is inhabited, by and large, by clueless, elitist rubes who have an unwarranted sense of importance. They fail to grasp the fact that the city they live in is just a beefed up version of Branson. When people in New York or Miami make fun of Tennessee, Nashville is the object of their ridicule. Memphis is seen by outsiders as a cool, progressive center of popular culture.

You just lost complete credibility with me on this one.

That's a shock. Don't let facts in the way of your stereotyping.
Stereotyping!!??! Memphis is the third most crime ridden city of 500,000 or more in the country according the chart we have been discussing in this thread. How is it stereotyping?

When was the last time you lived in New York or Miami? How often do you travel? Just because the knuckle draggers in Trashville say it's so, doesn't make it fact. New Yorkers hear Memphis, they think Sun Records, The Three Six Mafia, and Al Green. The same people hear Nashville and think Billy Ray Cyrus, Hee Haw, and Winona Judd.
