According to this, it looks like we lead the nation in plays per minute through week four (3.01 plays per minute). Several have mentioned it seems like we're going a bit slower this year, and it does feel that way at times, but according to this article from the AP, we've averaged 2.94 plays per minute over the past two seasons.

Edit: I see the spreadsheet below has our plays per minute last year during the regular season at 2.91.

Thoughts?

Perhaps a slightly more pertinent stat might be points per game. I think that one maybe doesn’t look quite so good compared to last year.

Better yet, one might compare our league record thus far with what it was at this juncture last year.

Just simply looking at speed. Not points or record. There are plenty of threads to discuss those.

Yes, this is why I get cranky pants when people start talking about how the "offense is slower" because of the new rules. The offense is technically slower, but not by much. And that's been clear since Virginia. It's just not converting, which I think people are mistaking or assuming as slowness.

Actually, points per possession is a better metric than points per game.

How are we technically slower when last year we avg 2.91 plays per minute and this year we're at 3.01 plays per minute? We're running more plays per minute with the clock not stopping as much. Wouldn't the ppm be even more if we still has the old rules?

I am actually shocked by these numbers because it does seem like we're going slower.

It would be mind blowing if the points and yards were higher.

Nah, all that matters is pace. Points and yards are overrated.

Edit: I mean seriously, to all of you bitching in this thread: why? What good does the constant negativity do? Guess what, none of us are on the coaching staff or the team. You’re not doing anything but making this site, and the outlook on Tennessee football, ever so slightly crummier for yourself and everyone else.

At the very least, save your snark for people other than Freak. He built this house and invited us all over. Don’t piss in his living room.

I think it seems slower his year because it’s not as enjoyable. This offense has different strengths and weaknesses and the coaches try and take advantage of what they have.

Some of you are so dense. He’s making a point we are very close to the same ppm so moving fast not slow. Wasn’t making a point that the O is better than last year.

Heupel has legitimately proven his offense can put up points in bunches. We’ve all known the weakness with his speedy offense is playing behind the chains and 3 n outs. Stuff that can be corrected. A lot of self inflicted wounds in a few of the games so far.

So we suck but we suck rapidly? Great stat, makes up for getting embarrassed at Gainesville.
