We've all seen the improvement of the offense this year, but against the SEC we've been deceptively average in scoring.

FL 20
GA 44 (defensive TD)
AL 16
SC 17 (def TD, punt ret inside 5)
LSU 17 (def TD)

That's 22.8 pts/gm

Without the GA explosion against a very avg opponent:

17.5 pts/gm
Failed to score over 20 in 4 of 5

Execution is better, but the better defenses have held us down pretty well. This surprised me when I looked at it. Maybe the running game is hurting, as well as some hit and miss passing at times.

THis game is a toss -up. I really think both teams can/have ability to blow each other out. Just depends on how the teams show up come Sat.

Why are you being so negative? Don't you realize that TCHFCATUTK and mini-Fulmer have resurrected the offense? We would be 0-9 with any other head coach/coordinator combination. You must be an Alabama fan in disguise.

Personally, i think your offense is incredible this year, just not as proficient against the #1 D of LSU

We are 2nd in the SEC in Scoring Offense and 3rd in the SEC in Total Offense.

While scoring more would be nice, we are certainly not average in the SEC.

I agree. It's incredible that an alleged SEC contender could rush for -11 yards in a home game.

What is amazing is that we have been able to be pretty productive in games where we have had no running game.

The way I see it, we have a pretty good defense which might have been very good if not for some key injuries. We have a pretty good offense, which is a little surprising considering 1) how bad it was last year, and 2) that the running game has been anemic for most of the season.

That gives us a pretty good team, but it is also what puts the alleged qualifier before the SEC conteder tag.

Those stats include non conference opponents. I was talking about offense versus the SEC.

No one said we stunk, but the luster is off some when you narrow it down to under 20 pts vs. 4 of 5 SEC teams. But this is also a good defensive league.

But they also include the numbers for the other SEC teams non-conference scheds. as well. Which teams have played a tougher schedule?

The point is, all SEC teams are scoring less against SEC opponents. Therefore, we are still doing better than most of the SEC against the SEC - hence not average.

You'd need to comare like scoring versus SEC teams excluding non-conference to determine that.

This offense is average at best, but the fact that the rest of the SEC is struggling to find points makes it appear above average in the SEC this year.

Thank you, but there is no way you can win a SEC title only with passing offense. The successful passing game can not wipe off the inept running game. In 1997, when we largely depend on Manning's passing game, we stiil have super freshman Jamal Lewis at the backfield. I am dreaming of another Jamal Lewis now...

Just based on Points scored(no matter where they come from: off/def)
SEC Opponents only

Points/Game
UT - 28.4
LSU - 28
Arky - 27.2
UF - 23
UGa - 21.1
Auburn - 20.8
Kentucky - 18.8
USC - 18.7
Bama - 17.3
MSU - 16
Vandy - 15.8
Miss. - 13.8

Total Off. yardage/Avg. Defense Faced
LSU - 420 (6.8)
Arky - 374 (7)
UF - 340 (5.9)
USC - 331 (7.4)
UGa - 329 (8.4)
Bama - 326 (7.5)
Kentucky - 324 (6.2)
Vandy - 322 (5.8)
UT - 307 (4)
Auburn - 306 (6.3)
Miss. - 268 (6.5)
MSU - 255 (5.5)

Considering 4 of the 5 games we played were against Top 16 Defenses in the Country (1, 12, 15, 16) (1, 2, 4, 5 in SEC), it's not that bad imho (other than losing 2 close ones =p)

Added avg. defense rating in the SEC for perspective.

Looking at the yards generated per avg. defense faced, we're top of the heap per se by a decent margin.

In conclusion since I decided to start crunching numbers in the SEC alone, I don't think UT's offense is all that bad off compared to everyone else. Running game notwithstanding.

Great stat work, sir. My hypothesis stands corrected. Apparently the Ole Vols are hanging in there offensively.

It would interesting to look at conference scoring compared to other years. Perhaps offensive scoring is just down in general.

I'm waiting for the next wave of schemes to take hold.

Just for comparison . . . without even looking at defensive and special teams TDs . . . Florida is only averaging 23 ppg in the SEC so far this year.

Since I started the spreadsheet to compare, I'm taking it further for the whole SEC and will post numbers when I'm done.

I have Florida at 20.7 ppg from offense, but I'll go back over the numbers once I get the whole thing fleshed out to make sure.

Just curious tho, do PAT's count as scoring offense and against scoring def.?

PATs should count for the offense and against the defense if the touchdown was scored by the offense and against the defense.

As a quick update since I finally got all the numbers inputted into the sheet. UT is ranked 9th in Total Off. yds. and 9th in Total Def. yds. when facing SEC opponents, but also has the #2 Scoring Offense. UT has faced an avg. Def. of 4.4 and Offense of 3.8.

Looking at that, we've faced pretty much the best the SEC has to offer this year in terms of off. and def.

Looking at the numbers, LSU should be kicking themselves at this point. They've pretty much dominated the stats on Off. and Def.

Heading to bed, but I've got to do the same Avg. Def. and Off. for the other SEC teams tomorrow, then if anyone wants my Excel scribbling, you're more than welcome to it.
