Hello VolNation. This question has been pestering me for awhile. Does anyone know if Texas pays the real UT royalties for using the "T" or the interlocking "UT" logo? I thought I heard that they did, but after doing some searching, I have come up with nothing. If anyone knows for sure please share. Mods move if necessary. Thanks guys.

I'd be anxious to hear the story on this whole situation because I've already used up all my reasons as to why we're the real UT on the Texas fans here.

We usually get to April before this discussion. It generally leads to a bastardized version of American history being presented as fact, at which time I make my points and leave the scraps for the booger eaters.

Don't act like you've never eaten boogers before JTD.

Many years ago I remember hearing that Texas got the official use of the logo west of the Mississippi and it is ours east of the Mississippi.

The have the rights to the interlocking UT...that's why we stopped using it I thought.

Not the same. Ours is rounded as theirs is squared.

In either case it seems both power T's are having a power outage.

Well the reason I brought it up was due to a discussion in my business law class about copyrights and such. But I have been curious about it for some time.

Just a matter of time before we see them with orange pants. I mean they have copied everything else why stop there? Maybe royalties are paid to descendents of Davey Crockett and the rest of the Volunteers.:D

the big T's are different enough that it's not a deal of copying, etc....same as we don't need to be going after Texas Tech and Texas A&M over the centers of their logos

correct. they (university of texas) also gave the university of tennessee a big payment to be the only ones to use it, IIRC

edit: if what i posted in a quote below turns out to be correct (I unfortunately cannot currently verify it), then this might be incorrect

We still use the interlocking UT. The band forms it & the baseball team wears it some.

well, band forming it isn't any sort of ownership thing

we don't use it on merchandise anymore nor is it used as any sort of official logo or logo put on or around the stadium or such

The baseball team wearing it isn't official? It being on utsports.com don't make it official? I got a 3 pack of Tennessee t-shirts from jc penneys for Christmas a year or 2 ago & I'm pretty sure the navy blue 1 has the interlocking UT on it.

where is it on utsports.com?

not used as an official logo, I meant in how the the university doesn't use the old ut for things like: news released involving the athletic programs, it's not a logo given for the NCAA's use (/distribution?), it's not a logo that's - i'm not familiar how rights work for what logos schools allow sports media to use with regard to their program, but there as well

that kind of stuff...

and that it's not a logo put up around the stadiums anymore, from what I can tell

Texas, by comparison, still puts that on all sorts of stuff including sales, merchandise, the stadium has a few, etc; by comparison, we don't

I'm not familiar with the baseball team uniforms or alternatives they might wear unfortunately; enlighten me please

someone posted this on an earlier thread, not sure the validiy of this reason or not, but anyways

Tennessee retained the rights to use it east of the Miss. River, but I seem to recall them making a marketing decision to be consistent and just use the power T everywhere.

The University of Texas has reached a settlement with the University of Tennessee over the use of the ''UT'' trademark on such items as T-shirts, beer mugs, key chains and customized toilet seats.

Texas said a possible court dispute loomed because Tennessee had applied to the federal government for the right to use the trademark on a number of items not covered under Texas' trademark rights.

Under the agreement between the two schools, Tennessee gets to use the trademark east of the Mississippi River and in Louisiana's West Baton Rouge Parish, home of Southeastern Conference member Louisiana State University.

Texas will own the trademark everywhere else west of the Mississippi.

In addition, the agreement gives the Longhorns and Volunteers limited rights to use the popular interlocking UT logo design in each other's territory during bowl games or other special events.

A staff recommendations to the Texas Board of Regents said the solution was not ideal, but ''it does avoid a costly and protracted administrative and court proceeding.''

So Tenn might still have ownership, they just chose to stop using it after all that
