That's heartbreaking. I hope he is able to recover. I'm sending all the good feelings I can muster to this guy. Damn!

Heard they did emergency surgery and he had a head injury. Even if he recovers, his football days are over.

Glad he was only a mile away from Vandy. Poor kid I hope he makes a speedy recovery without any long lasting issues.

What's really unfortunate about this, this is about 6 years after Tennessee State suffered another loss when defensive back William Wayne Jones III collapsed and died during a practice in November of 2012. To have to deal with this twice in less then a decade is horrible.

Latest report I've found, 4 hours ago.
Still listed as critical.
Was really hoping he had at least been listed as serious at this point.

Prayers with the young man. Like others have said being so close to Vandy probably saved his life to this point. These incidents put sports or a bad season into perspective.

I hope he makes a full recovery. Would they announce yet or know at this time if he were brain dead?

Why would the NCAA stop a GoFundMe for an injured linebacker?

So apparently several independent gofundme accounts where set up to raise money for his medical expenses. TSU ordered them taken down as they apparently violate NCAA rules.

This despite the fact that it's still not clear if he's even going to pull through, and even if he does he's likely suffered life altering injuries that will be with him forever.

Well of course. Can't allow any impermissible benefits for a guy who will, almost certainly, never again be a "student-athlete." Think of the unfair advantages that TSU will reap if this kid's immediate medical and long-term care are supported by the kindess of strangers.

And this is also assuming he lives.

Even if TSU can and probably will cover many if not all expenses he might have right now, I doubt they are going to help him or his family say 5 years from now if he's crippled and bedridden.

Personally, I'd say if a friend or family member wants to raise money separately from TSU to give directly to the family, I say let them, and TSU should ignore any sanctions that the NCAA issues.

That's the NCAA for you. They turn a blind eye to cheating that has gone on at universities for decades, but won't let people help a young man whose life has been permanently altered.

NCAA has to have it's priorities and protect the integrity of amateur athletics...............

I have long thought and said the NCAA should have insurance protection against catastrophic injuries like this. Even if he survives, his life, most likely will be impaired forever with special needs.

The silver lining to this tragedy if this was to happen anywhere that it happened at vandy that close to world class medical facilities.

Independent accounts where the money may never get to the kid. Having one verified account will actually make it easier and safer. GoFundMe is full of scams and the NCAA may have accidentally gotten one right
