Tennessee: Surpluses and increase in cigarette tax

I'm sure they'll find some fiscal rationale, but this is really just an attempt to legislate morality. Increase taxes on perceived "sins" like cigarettes, liquor and firearms, so more people will decide that the cost is too high and quit. Repeat until you have the Utopian society that we would surely have if not for those dirty smokers.

It's using moral BS, so they'll have more money to promote their fiscal BS (gotta provide for those campaign contributors).

but our state Leg has done the same deal....Smoking is bad, so we'll tax it to stop people from smoking...but that didnt work, so know smokers are a good kick in to the general fund...All the while, the only agricultural industry here, the tobacco farmers who grow "Connecticut River Broadleaf", the best cigar wrappers in the world, go under and sell out to developers in order to stay alive...I grow my own Tobacco in my backyard, about 2 dozen plants, and roll my own, though the growing, cultivating, and curing process is a pain in the ass, i can usually smoke for 6 months on my own dime before i have to go back to buying Winston's.....as my own peculiar protest, i no longer fly the national flag and state flag out front, preferring the Bunker Hill and Gadsden flags instead

Yep.

Here's one of my favorite sayings,

"The only thing worse than a tax and spend Democrat is a borrow and spend Republican"

I like that one. I was ready for the era of smaller government. I think if Gingrich had remained house speaker it might have happened. Now, it'll be at least another generation before such an opportunity arises. Maybe once the vapid, self centered youth of today are giving up more than half their paycheck as Medicare tax there will be another "revolution" against tax and spend policies.

Well honestly so has half the Legislature here. If you're a Democrat and don't want to lose that cushy seat, switch letters from D to R and bring your values with you....
