In last week's Vandy Scout I discussed their pitching staff at length. I think some numbers from that series might surprise some people.

The Vandy staff walked 10 and struck out 17.

The UT staff walked 8 and struck out 25.

Both gave up 21 hits, however the Vols outscored Vandy, 23-9 over the course of the weekend.

Moving on...

Tennessee Tech 25-8 Overall, 9-6 conference, RPI 180, SOS 296, 9-4 record on the road.

Tech has played two teams with winning records, Vanderbilt and Lipscomb. The lost the Vandy game 4-0 and won the Lipscomb game 10-9. Most recently, they lost a series this weekend versus Austin Peay.

Typically, I start with the pitching, but the Golden Eagle's strength is their offense.

At the Plate

Their team batting average is .317.

Daniel Miller has a ridiculous .437 batting average and an even more ridiculous slugging percentage of .700! It's no fluke either, he has 130 at bats. He has 7 home runs on the season and leads the team with 57 hits.

Zach Stephens, .250, 8 HR's...

...Zach Stephens, who in the fifth inning tattooed a ball over the left field fence for his 51st career home run, tying him for first on Tech's all-time career list for home runs with A.J. Kirby-Jones.

Stephens also recorded his 200th career RBI, making him the first player in both Tech and Ohio Valley Conference history to hit 50 home runs and record 200 RBI in a career. He also now sits just four hits away from breaking the all-time hits record at Tech and three long balls from breaking the OVC home run record.

But...he doesn't lead the team in home runs this year, Brandon Thomasson does. He has a .333 BA, .659 slugging %, and 9 home runs. Not bad numbers right? His on base percentage ranks just 6th on the team, these guys can all hit.

In fact, Tennessee Tech ranks 3rd NATIONALLY in runs scored per game at 8.8, just behind UK. They rank fourth in the nation in scoring margin with a +4.2.

On the Mound

They have a couple of decent pitchers, but I don't think we'll be facing them. My best guess is that we will face...

Jacob Honea: 4.43 ERA, 3-1 w/l, 22.1 IP, 24 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 13 BB, 18 SO, b/avg. .287...

They generally use multiple pitchers in mid week games on average 4 but often even more.

The team ERA is 3.79

For the Vols, getting his second start on the season, Brett Marks: ERA 0.00, 2-0 w/l, 4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, b/avg. 0.71

Summary

This is one of those games, we could come out and shut them down offensively or it might be a total shootout if our pitching falters. Hopefully we take care of business here and keep the momentum going. I'm guessing they'll have some fired up fans and their team will be bowed up and ready to play.

I may add to this when the starting pitchers are announced tomorrow.
