Earlier this week, Tennessee’s Butch Jones walked into the team’s training room. A small group of players didn’t notice the head coach’s entrance, and Jones overheard one of the Volunteers reminding teammates not to be late for a team meeting later that day.

That might not sound like much, Jones said, but to him it was a gratifying illustration of progress. That’s the nature of a rebuild: the small things, like that scene in the training room, eventually accumulate to become one big shift in attitude and culture.

“We make strides each and every day,” said Jones, whose infectious and consistent positivity has been central to those strides.

Jones, the 45-year-old whom UT hired from Cincinnati, has instituted all sorts of inspirational actions and rhetoric, but perhaps none more resounding than the “brick-by-brick” mantra. He has even gone so far as to reward players with actual bricks, to drive home the message.

No, the program Jones is working to construct at Tennessee isn’t going up overnight. He has been careful with that message, noting that the players understand it's a grind to build. Jones also is conscious of that fact that it’s a universal sort of makeover, one that extends to the classroom, meeting rooms, weight room and beyond.

Maybe it’s just because it’s Alabama week, but Jones even used Nick Saban’s term “process” to describe the overall plan. But the football field, quite clearly, is where things will be measured and sometimes scrutinized.

That’s why getting a signature, hang-your-hat-on sort of win in Year 1 -- like last week’s victory over then-No. 11 South Carolina -- is crucially important for attitude adjustment.

“Are we making progress? Yes, I definitely can see that,” Jones told me Tuesday. “We’re generating momentum. I think around the country, they know there’s an energy here. They know there’s a buzz.”

Tennessee leads our look at five programs in Year 1 of rebuilding projects. A couple of other SEC programs, a Pac-12 school and an ACC school are also included.

Interesting. I'm not an insider, so I'm curious, how does he define "tops"? Does he mean that the most rebuilding needs to be done (Colorado might have an argument there)? Or that it is coming along the best so far? Or simply that it's his first program spotlight in a series of 5 articles?

What sort of case does he make? Does he use stats or historic data or is this strictly anecdotal, like the opening?

Don't think this writter has heard CBJ speak much. I don't think I have ever heard him finish a sentence without using the word process.

Gotta love what CBJ is doing here though!

way back before spring practice I told everyone that there was something very special going on up on the hill. I am glad to see that the rest of the country is starting to notice also.

So you've heard every quote by Jones huh? I mean the writer even takes strides to note that perhaps it's because of the week, so he used a Saban term. But evidently there's no chance this writer called Jones and got some quotes from this week, because obviously you've heard everything Jones has ever muttered. Think before you type people.

Seriously? I wasn't trying to be an arse. Sorry it rubbed you the wrong way. Just pointing out that CBJ does use the word pretty often, Not because its bama week.

As someone who received a degree a journalism and worked in the field before joining the service I just tire of the constant bashing of sportswriters, especially those that are national, non UT Specific writers because they don't know every single detail about the program like passionate fans. It's a write up giving Jones nothing but great reviews and it looks fantastic for the program as a whole, but people just want to bash on anyone that writes about Tennessee, good or bad. To me, it's just gotten old. Sorry

Guess I could have left the word writer out of it. Other than that it was more of a general comment than a bash.
But any way, I....:mf_surrender:

again, I apologize. Not directed at you, but the ESPN hates us bullcrap is beyond stale. Anytime someone does a write up with something negative about Tennessee, no matter how true it is, a lot of people here are ready to hang the writer. When someone writes something good, they still want to bash the writer because maybe he only got half the information or something of that ilk. I should just let it slide, but I had a moment of weakness.

To this I agree 100%. I get tired of the ESPN and CBS hate/love us talk as well.

Dang it! Can't find a two smilies shaking hands! lol

I'm certainly not creative enough to make that! But there is a resemblance and it's kinda awkward IMO.
