From the UT press guide...

Dec. 28, 1957

Jacksonville -- In Paul "Bear" Bryant's last game as Aggie head coach, Tennessee used a 4th quarter field goal by placekicker Sammy Burklow and a stubborn defense to hand the Aggies a 3-0 defeat on a wet and muddy Gator Bowl field. It was the lowest scoring game in the history of the Gator Bowl and was played before a Gator Bowl record crowd of 43,709.

The field goal was the first of Burklow's career and came from 17 yards out with 5:30 left to play in the game. It was a day for the defenses to shine as action was confined between the 35-yard lines.

The game was marked by the now-famous collision between Vol tailback Bobby Gordon and Aggie Heisman Trophy winner John David Crow on the Vols' march to the winning score. Both players recovered to continue play, with Gordon holding for Burklow's game winning field goal.

Wow, we passed more in this last SECCG than we did that year. Is that considered improvement?

Conditions then were pretty unfavorable...

Reminds me of Oregon State's defeat of OJ Simpson and USC in 1967. OSU won 3-0

Bear Bryant never beat Coach Neyland... I like to point that out to the 'bammers here in b'ham and when they pull some crap about them never playing... I just point out his coaching at UK and A&M! :D I can't remember... I think Bryant was 0-3-2 against Neyland? Allvol?

Bear's record versus Tennessee was 17-13-2.

At one point, Bear was only 6-12-2 against Tennessee. Then he reeled off 11 straight victories before losing his last game against Tennessee in 1982.

He never beat General Neyland in 6 tries (0-4-2).

In 1953, a year after Neyland retired, Bear's Kentucky team (his last at UK) beat the Harvey Robinson coached Vols 27-21.
