Tennessee vs The Maxims vs Vanderbilt
Well, at least Tennessee managed to not LOSE its game Saturday against Vanderbilt. That win puts Tennessee into the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta on December 4.
Cheer! Holler! Rah!
So much for the highlights.
Allowing Vanderbilt to score for the first time in three years: embarrassing
Allowing a Vanderbilt team that could only manage THIRTEEN POINTS against the otherwise hapless Kentucky MildKats to ring up THIRTY-THREE: Unforgivable.
Tennessee has two weeks to FIX IT before the rematch with Aubrin, Im not holding my breath.
After some setbacks in the first quarter, Vanderbilt, VANDER-freakin-BILT, moved the ball against Tennessees defense and scored at will. The most telling stat of the game: Vanderbilt punted exactly THREE times.
GREAT GOOD GAWD ALMIGHTY, PEOPLE! WERE TALKING ABOUT VANDER-freakin-BILT!!!!
WHAT, IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, IS GOING ON?????
As the Admiral said in the movie TOP GUN, I want some butts, and I want them NOW!
Given Tennessees less-than-stellar performances in the last two games Im publicly calling for wholesale changes on the Tennessee coaching staff, and I dont really care who stays or goes.
Should, God forbid, the MildKats pull off an upset Saturday, I want them ALL, every coach, trainer, strength coach, David Keith, - the whole worthless lot - fired before dawn on Sunday.
So how did the team do compared to the Maxims?
1. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win.
The Common-hos, being who and what they are, made a critical error before the season started by not enlisting the services of a reliable kicker. Had they done that, chances are, they would have won Saturday. Let THAT one sink in, Vol fans.
2. Play for and make the breaks. When one comes your way SCORE!
Tennessees defense showed up for exactly two plays, the offense scored after the first.
3. If at first the game or the breaks go against you, dont let up PUT ON MORE STEAM!
Just to re-iterate what I said two weeks ago, putting on more steam does NOT necessarily involve sandwiches at Sam & Andys. Coaches Chavis, Sanders and Fulmer, please take note of this. Thank you.
4. Protect our kickers, our quarterback, our lead and our ballgame.
Protect our ballgame means you DO NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES allow VANDER-freakin-BILT to score thirty-three points.
5. Ball! Oskie! Cover, block, cut and slice, pursue and gang tackle THIS IS THE WINNING EDGE.
Vanderbilt, VANDER-freakin-BILT, had 420 yards of total offense. I can think of no more damning indictment.
6. Press the kicking game. Here is where the breaks are made.
The experiments continue.
7. Carry the fight to Vanderbilt and keep it there for sixty minutes.
VANDER-freakin-BILT had the ball for 24:38 of the first 45 minutes of game time. Draw your own conclusions.
Yes, Im relieved Tennessee prevailed over Vandy. Im ecstatic that the Vols are going back to Atlanta for the 2004 SEC Championship Game.
I just hope we dont have to find out if the scoreboards in the Georgia Dome can register three-figure scores.
