I emailed the lady that posted the story and provided her the link to this thread. I want to send a donation if possible. I feel bad for her.

She seemed fairly intelligent. I’m surprised she fell for the instructions to cash out her savings account and go buy a bunch of gift cards. It would be an even bigger scam to send that cash to an accomplice and then go public so a go fund me campaign fills the account back up. She’s a widow... hopefully the reporters have vetted her story before giving her the publicity.

The part that gets me is when she uses her credit cards to buy gift cards and send them to the guy. At that point it should be clear that you're being scammed.

I do feel bad for this woman. I never give these turds a chance. They ask me how I'm doing and I respond with, "just fine to you came along". CLICK If they call asking for info, I just tell them if they think I have done something wrong, come to my house with a warrant. I never give any info over the phone. JUST hang up! I don't care who they claim to be, SS, police, whoever.

Better than hanging up, tell them to hang on for a minute and set the phone down. Keeps them on hold for a while and spending time away from pursuing their next target. Works with telemarketers as well.
