Texas House committee approves tax break on yachts - BusinessWeek

AUSTIN, TEXAS

The Texas House Ways and Means Committee has approved a tax break for those who want to buy yachts costing $250,000 or more.

In a vote late Thursday, the committee approved a bill by Houston Republican Rep. John Davis. The proposed law would cap the maximum sales tax the state would collect on the sale of a personal boat.

Davis says the measure is needed because Florida has a similar law and boat buyers are going there to make their purchases. The measure passed on an 8-3 vote along party lines.

Democrats are outraged at the proposed tax break at a time when the state must cut $27 billion in state services from the budget.

The bill will now be considered by the full House.

If they're soooo outraged then let them get out their check books. Democrat excuses will begin in 5...4...3...2...

Dems think we can spend our way out of a recession, repubs think we can cut our way out of a deficit. Americans are just not very good at math.

Sounds to me like they'd rather keep businesses open (which pay taxes) and sell boats in Texas rather than lose it to Florida. If people are going to Florida to buy boats, it wouldn't make Texas a dime even if they had a 99% tax on them.

This is why the Dems will control a lot more state legislatures in the next five years. This kind of arrogance and thumbing of noses by the Repub/TPers is going on all over the country. Here in Florida, this TP guy Rick Scott won, came in, and he and the legislature have gone completely off the reservation. Polls show he'd lose if the election were held again today by 20 + points. Same thing happened with Newt & company.

That's the guy that ordered mandatory drug tests for all state employees, right? All to be conducted by the company he owns?

so you're actually going to claim that democrat-controlled state legislatures don't give tax breaks to corporations? Especially corporations that employ a lot of people in said states?

Let's at least try to get the facts right...

  1. The initial legislation was based on the Governor's pledge to require people over 18 receiving cash-assistance welfare to pay for and pass a drug test. I don't really have a problem with that.
  2. There was then an executive order requiring those applying for government jobs to also pass a drug test, and for random tests to occur for current government employees. Most companies also require drug tests as part of pre-employment screening, and many also have random drug tests for employees. I don't have a problem with this either.
  3. I have not seen anything that requires these drug tests to occur at the company (Solantic) that he has ownership in. While I understand the potential for perceived conflict of interest, this is not the story you guys are trying to make it out to be.

idiotic at best.

billion dollar corp under obama pays no corp taxes at all and you mention republicans.

people do cross state lines or drive two states over to save money on taxes if the savings out weighs gas and time. I can personally tell you I haqve done this myself on more than one occasion when buying a new watch or piece of jewelry.
