It is funny that TTU AD Kirby Hocutt told their fans after firing KK that they will be elite again and then he goes out and hires Matt Wells. Not exactly the name their fans (according to their message boards) were associating with becoming elite.

Certainly not a big wave sexy hire, but Wells did a really good job at Utah State and seems to be a solid coach. I mean how elite does Texas Tech think they are going to be ? How elite were they ever ?

Wow. Let me break down my Larry David gif, because there seems to be some confusion here.

1. I am not a TTU fan or care about their program, but I pay attention to the coaching carousel. The hire was underwhelming to their fans and anyone paying attention based on the AD comments after firing KK.

If an AD says "we are going to be an elite football program again" and rolls out a coach with a winning percentage just a little north of .500, I think that causes some head scratching. I compared it to when Botch (when introduced here) told everyone at the presser, he was going to hire the best coaching staff in college football.

2. Reading the boards outside of VN, Texas Tech fans were not excited. I don't know who they wanted or expected, but they seemed to be expecting someone who would make them "elite". As we all know very well here in VN, a mid-major coach with a win percentage around or below .500, isn't going to get the fan base excited.

3. Matt Wells has done good, not great at Utah State. He is coming off two losing seasons, so to hire someone like that, I think it would be a bit puzzling too.

TT isn't going to go out there and say "we are going to hire someone that maintains the status quo of being the Big 12s whipping boy". of course they are going to say "elite". only so many elite coaches out there.

Hope that lands well with our fan base when we are hiring our next coach.

4 of his 7 seasons including 2018 regular season, Utah state has had 1 9 win season, 2 10 win seasons and 1 11 win season. It may be MWC, but when you are recruiting to Utah State, and have 4 of 7 winning seasons, I'd say he's pretty solid.
