Looks like ESPN is going to start a push for the regulation of text messaging by coaches to recruits. I wonder how much of an impact text messaging really has on recruiting. I never even check mine.

I watched the segment on ESPN about it. Apparently it's quite a big deal. John Calapari was talking about it from a coaches perspective and they interviewed several high school players.

Coaches are texting players and parents every day. They are also using it to get around the limit to the number of phone calls a coach can make. A coach can text a player and ask that player to call them. Then when the player calls the coach, that does not count against the allotment of calls that the coach has. A player can call a coach as many times as they would like.

I think, if nothing else, the rule needs to be clarified. I'll be that we will see some limitations on that rule in the very near future.

It's hard to believe that the rules haven't been updated to take into account text messaging and e-mail.

How would they keep track of how many texts or emails you send without the NSA getting involved?

Actually, how do they keep track of the phone calls allowed too?

Actually, I think the rules do take into account text messaging and it's perfectly acceptable. I just don't think they could forsee the impact it would have and how coaches would use it to get around other rules.

I wonder if the size of CPF's fingers hurt our recruiting last year? It has to be hard to text if you've got big fingers. Maybe Phillips can make him a cell phone with a jumbo sized keypad.

Little wonder. I imagine just one message would send you into a grammatical shock that would take weeks to recover from... :D

Nah. This board desensitized me to all that.

The NCAA should hire Lou Holtz, that way every time they made a new rule, he could tell them how he would go about breaking it.

Contact rules are in place to deter contact to the recruit. No one is going to know if phone calls, text messaging, and emails are sent unless someone speaks out against it. You cant stop it totally but only minimize it as much as possible through harsh sanctions.
