There are plenty of records in football that are broken and set every year. National championships. Trophies. Winning percentages. But there is one record that for whatever reason, perhaps its obscurity or possible unatainability, has captivated me. And of all teams out there... It belongs to Wyoming.

It is the 100 point game. In 1949, under Coach Bowden Wyatt, the Wyoming Cowboys beat Northern Colorado 103 - 0 becoming (I think) the only team to ever score more than 100 in one game.

Now it's perfectly reasonable to regard that record as untouchable. But there is always a chance. And it might just be this season.

Texas Tech has back-to-back home games against D-IAA opponnents this season, being Sam Houston State. and Indiana State. Of the two, I think Texas Tech could drop the 1-0-0 on Indiana State. Sam Houston State showed a relatively solid defense (at least at the D-IAA level) and would probably be difficult to put 100 on. But Indiana State is a sub .500 team in a pretty weak conference that allowed nearly 40 points per game last season.

So the opponnents could let it up, but could Texas Tech earn it? Even though Sonny Cumbie was a phenomenal passer for the Red Raiders last season, many argue his numbers were more because of the system he played in rather than his actual abilities. If this is indeed true, then Cody Hodges should be stepping into this season looking to eclipse the 3,500 yard mark. If Texas Tech maintains the system, then they have the skill to manage 100 points on the scoreboard.

One thing that is very different nowadays, however, is sportsmanship. Even against the weakest of opponnents, teams will not intentionally run up the score by more than 4 or 5 TD's. If Tech decides to play good sport, then 100 points is obviously out of the question.

Read it all if you want to, or just skip it and post your own thoughts. Do you think the 100 point game is possible?

I doubt we'll see 100 points in a game again.

Milo's right, teams will pull all their starters and just sit on the ball. I think Oklahoma was up by 49 - 0 or so in the first half of a couple games in 2003 (Texas A&M, maybe? I know Oklahoma pulled Jason White at halftime and still won 77 -0), but they couldn't keep up that pace for an entire game.

It would take a coach that was willing to risk his best players' health and season on trying to get to 100. Maybe Spurrier, Mike Leach, or Hal Mumme could try it, but I doubt it.

"Cumberland's greatest individual play of the game occurred when fullback Allen circled right for a six-yard loss."

Well Leach has a better shot than anybody in the country right now. One of the most explosive offenses in the country vs. one of the weakest defenses in D-IAA.

 Cut me a break GAVol... I wasn't bitching at you, just saying he didn't coach in the SEC.

There are four 100 point games in UT history:

Oct 7, 1904; UT 104, American Univeristy 0
Oct 5, 1912; UT 101, King University 0
Sept 25, 1915; UT 101, Carson Newman 0
Oct 23, 1915; UT 101, Cumberland 0

Alright. Well, Wyoming had the last one. I do know that.

And I know it would be fun to see another 100 point game.

Maybe I'm getting old, but I can't see anything that would be cool about hanging 100 points on someone. At some point class has to intervene.

Houston hung 95 on SMU the year right after they came off the death penalty (88 or 89 if I remember correctly). I thought itwas one of the most classless things I've ever seen.

I do daydream about that occasionally :D, but you know as well as I do that if we ran the score up on anybody it would just serve as a motivational tool the next time we played them. Every coach knows when it's time to call off the dogs, some just don't have the class to do it.

The funny thing about that though is what happened the next year. The Houston coach got the head job with the Houston Oilers and opened up against the Falcons. In that game, Jerry Glanville chose to stay in the shotgun late into the 4th quarter with a big lead and threw a late TD pass. In the post game, Glanville was holding the football from that TD pass and made it a point to look into the camera and say that the last TD pass was for SMU and that he was mailing the ball to the SMU Athletic Department so that those kids that got 90+ points hung on them would know that in life what comes around ALWAYS goes around.

I wasn't aware of that. I always knew there was something I kinda liked about Glanville
