The All Things Cycling Thread

What kind if elevation gains did you encounter? Many hills or mostly flat?

Rolling hills. A few 1/2 mile long climbs. Nothing like the mountains. Had a tail wind for a majority of it. Rode point-to-point rather than out and back. A few miles of gravel roads, which cut down the sidewall of one of the guys tires. Had problems with flats and he had to abandon at mile 80. The gravel was my favorite part.

I need to lose some weight but I have really bad knees. Several of my friends suggested that I get a bike. I decided to take a trip down to the local bike shop and after talking with the salesman I decided on a Giant Hybrid, one for me and my wife. I have been riding for about two weeks now and I’m doing between six and ten miles a day depending on how sore I am from the day before. I have to admit that I am felling a lot better and my knees have not hurt me at all, in fact they seem to be getting better. Now if I could just manage to lose some weight.

6-10 miles a day on a bike isn't going to be a weight loss miracle worker. You'll have to increase your endurance and heart rate to effectively lose weight on a bike. Heart rate is the key to burning calories quickly. Paired with a good diet, you'll notice effects pretty quickly. Bikes are definitely the next best thing to swimming as far as low impact goes.

Thats a good start man. How much you trying to lose?

I know its going to take some time but I have to get back in some sort of shape before I do alot more. Each day gets a little better. If heart rate is the key than I have to be doing ok, feels like its beating about 200 bpm on the hills.:)

I would love to lose about 50 or 60. I have talked to people who tell me that I should have no problem losing this amount if I just stick with it. We will see. Not to sure how this is going to work out this winter. It's already dark when I get home. I have been thinking about an indoor stand for this winter.

Sustained heart rate is most important.

Trainers are boring, but necessary to carry over fitness to spring.

It's like 90mph winds here. I'll just stand around the shop today. Doesn't look like anyone is going to take advantage of our 20% off sale...

What do you know about the bikes for sale on bikes direct ? It looks like they have some decent components for the price

Components are almost all factory rejects, meaning they were originality sent to name brands and the upon inspection sent back to the manufacturer. That's how BD was able to purchase them so cheap. The frames are low quality and heavy. Corners are cut on bar tape, chains, cables, and housings... I generally recommend to stay away. Their customer service is great, though.

I realize you could save some money, but why not buy from a local shop? You get to ride the bike in person to see if you like it. They can fit you to it and in the long run could provide help with any issues that may arise. I can see the benefit to buy online for some things, but a whole bike just does not seem like it would be worth the risk.

But I am biased since I worked in a shop during college.

side note I have not been on my road bike in probably a month plus...depressing..I may have to ride it to the Titans game Sunday if the weather is as nice as they are saying.

Do you ride the greenway from Percy Priest Dam out to the stadium? I just started riding at the tail end of the summer before last. I had an old POS Schwin that a neighbor had given me to start with, but bought a bike from bikes direct just to see if I'd enjoy it enough to continue riding. Turns out that I do, but the bike I bought isn't that bad at all for the money I paid for it. I went with a cyclocross because of the roads I typically ride are less than stellar. I figured the 700x32 tires would provide a better ride than the 23's. I figure I'll ride it another season and then upgrade.
the seat that came with it was awful and it took me about a week's worth of rides to dial in the fit, but other than that I haven't had any complaints

It's freaking 50* out and I'm stuck at work. Why aren't people buying bike stuff when it's this nice out? Going to definitely go out for a ride after work.

Solid points but sometimes the cost savings is too great to pass up. Every bike I've bought has been online.

bought a used Epic for the same price as a new hardtail StumpJumper. bought my wife's bike for less than half and it had only been ridden twice.

Went to a shop to buy a road bike. Wanted a nice aluminum frame. something training rides when i couldn't get to the trails. the sales guy would only show me carbon bikes. I got annoyed and left. Few weeks later bought a carbon Madone with full Ultegra for just a few dollars more than the aluminum frame bike i was going to buy at the shop.

It's definitely difficult to compete with online prices as a shop. That's why customer service is so important in this industry. A customer will spend more money in the shop long term if you offer better service. Parts are the killer... can't stand it when people want us to price match some obscure website that has their prices below our wholesale cost. /rant

22 road miles today. Wasn't feeling so well, but was a nice day out. Probably the last nice day of the year. 60* and no wind. Roads were a little damp and it was pretty foggy.

Got on my road bike for the first time in about 2 months yesterday. It was clear the motor for my bicycle was not running very smooth. 15 miles and about 90% flat..depressing
