The All Things Cycling Thread

Bike shop popped my brake pad back in, refilled my stans, patched my kids tire - $10. those guys rock.

Surprised that a 3-year-old is even riding. I don't think I learned until I was 6 or 7. I was a late bloomer.

He rides a balance bike. no pedals. bought him a real bike a couple of months ago. he can pedal it but hasn't figured out how to turn. now that the weather is warm I figure he'll be riding it by summer.

Cool. Another generation heads down the pathway towards doom.

When did cycling season end?

Octoberish when it gets cold. I switch to swimming/running for the cold months.

Any reason why you want a Tarmac specifically? Obviously I'd suggest the best model that you can afford, the only thing they'll differ in is build packages. They seem to be overpriced...

I have never rode a Specialized before, but a friend I used to work with mentioned I should give it a shot. I do not think I would enjoy the Roubaix, so the Tarmac seemed like the next best option. Aren't all bikes overpriced? Well to me they are since I used to work at a Trek store and know the mark-up. I may just go with what I know and own a few of, which would be a Trek.

I just want to go carbon frame now, and will do full Ultegra i am thinking.

Specialized has that silly zertz system on some of their bikes that is just dumb. Not on the Tarmac, though.

I think Trek is the most overpriced brand. They cut a lot of corners on midrange bikes that others don't. I'm more of a fan of smaller brands, they have more to prove and I think there's a better value. Plus I've never seen another Felt ZC in two years.

I'm on 105 and looking to upgrade to Ultegra or Ultegra DI2 by the end of the year.

I guess I have never really looked into smaller brands just because I always try and buy something at a LBS. Most of them in Nashville just sell the large brands. Trek/Specialized being the big ones.

I live in a city with 250000 people. We have 5 bike shops and no one carries the same brand plus a custom frame builder in town. I would think there would be more variety in a city the size of Nashville.

2nd place out of 5. it was hilarious to watch. the "race" was only 30 yds long but no one was at the finish line so they all kept going and turned on the big kid course. they raced about 100 yds and were so tired. they all looked like they had just finished a tour stage.

I find that hard to believe.

Believe what you want then. Trek/Specialized are at both Bikers Choice locations, Cumberland Transit, MOAB stores, and Trek was at the old Bike Pedlar. Raleigh is at REI, Sun N Ski, and Ride615. Specialized is at Gran Fondo, which also sells some high end stuff. I think the shops in the trendy areas downtown sell Surly, I believe.

That shop looked pretty good from the outside when I was in Knoxville a few weekends ago. I am not sure how much traffic the greenway has at that trailhead, but if it is high, then it should be a good location.

No, I hadn't, though I should have, since I go by there.

If the other nearby stores are still selling bikes (I haven't been paying attention) that would be four of them in about a three mile area. Wonder how that will work out?

I have known Randy for nearly 20 years. First time I met him, I was checking out bikes at Interwheel one day and left my driver's license during a test ride. We had been talking about where I was working. When he closed that night, he brought my license to me. That sealed the deal, bought a bike there the next week.

Trace - Trek & Felt
Gran Fond - Specialized, Orbea, Bianchi, Focus & Guru
Eastside - Giant, Scott & Cannondale
Sun & Ski - Look, Fuji, Orbea, Masi

you have options. just need to look.

Most of those you listed are large brands, which is what I was saying initially. I personally have nothing again them, I was just pointing out earlier that Nashville does not have many smaller brands. Side note, did not realize Giant was at Eastside. For awhile the West End Bike Pedlar location was the only Giant dealer. I know they were attempting to get into CT, but they really just deal with Trek/Specialized. Which shop was it that closed in the Shelby Bottoms area?

I think I have narrowed it down to the Trek Madone 4.7 or the Specialized Tarmac Comp Mid Compact. But I still want to ride a Specialized to see how I like the geometry because they have a longer top tube than Treks.

Always good to meet "honest" people in business.

I haven't much occasion to shop LBSs recently. I buy much of whatever I need to buy online.

Don't judge me.
