The Association Football Thread

Messi probably has already had a better club career, trophy and award wise. And he's only played in one World Cup during his prime.

Which I why I said "so far" in my post earlier. He's got plenty of time to improve it but, right now, there's a hole in his resume.

I don't think Messi will ever win a World Cup, but that doesn't mean that when it's all said and done he won't be a top 3 player in my eyes. Sometimes things just don't work out. We all know that he'd have back-to-back-to-back WC championships if he played for Spain.

He doesn't necesarally have to win a WC but he could use to play better on the international stage. Sometimes he seems to disappear when playing for Argentina.

I actually think he plays just as well for Argentina; it's just a different style of play. Sure, he doesn't score even a fraction of the goals he scores with Barca, but he is THE catalyst for Argentina. Barcelona has Iniesta and Xavi creating spaces, which leaves Messi free to do what he does. When Argentina plays he's always in the center of a scoring play. Higuan will probably score more goals at the 2014 WC, but Messi is still far and away the best player in the western hemisphere.

edit: Also, USA better get their **** together in the next year or Mexico will destroy us in the qualifiers. We wouldn't have stood a chance against them tonight.

Cosign this post. I've always said this but people have never seen the same. He basically directly creates eery single one of their goals.

Fair enough, I can't really claim to be right and you guys are wrong, just a matter of preference I suppose. When I see him play for Barca he seems to effect the game from one end of the pitch to the other. I don't usually get that same impression watching him play for Argentina.

I will say though that is also effected by style of play from the two different sides. As is probably obvious from my post above regarding Cruyff, I love the idea of "total football". Barca's impression of the Dutch in the 70's lends itself to someone of Messi's ability to dominate a game everywhere.

Welp, United have a test tomorrow at Anfield. Hope we can break our streak of bad luck against those scouse bastards.

This could be a huge statement game for the reds, letting the rest of the epl know that they are indeed contenders. You know Anfield will be wanting blood, they always do.

Both teams can go on strong scoring runs. Liverpool's defense is still lacking consistency, so I expect Man U will be able to score. I'm still not sold on De Gea and Man U's defense tho, they could easily get exposed in this fixture.

That being said, I think the devils win 3-2 in a high scoring affair. Kenny likes the spotlight tho, especially against Man U.

****ing Giggs.

11 min + stoppage (at this point) to turn it around.

I do heart Stevie G though, so at least it wasn't beer gut who scored on us.

CHICHARITO!!!!! Wow, impeccable timing on my part, literally scored as I typed this.

I didn't really understand why SAF didn't play Rooney the full 90. Looks like City will be at the top of the table.

Being that the game was at Anfield I would have expected him to start. At least we got a point out of it.

HUGE game next week vs City to reclaim top of the table.

Champions League action today

Notable games and predictions:

Man City 3 - Villareal 1

Bayern 3 - Napoli 2 Hate to say it, but I think the 10 or 12 (lost count) game unscored upon streak ends today.

Man Utd 2 - Otelul Galat 0 Think it's finally time for Man U to put it together in the CL

Lyon 2 - Real Madrid 1 Upset pick of the day

Ajax 1 - Zagreb 0

What a horse**** straight red for Vidic. Not impressed with our play today, but at least we got the points. We will dismantle them 2nd leg at OT.

Bigger fish to worry about this weekend. Buck Fama and City.
