Pearl and Forbes are spending the final day of the July evaluation period at the Summer In The City event on the St. John's campus watching Jayvaughn Pinkston. Also, Tennessee is ramping up its recruitment of Trevor Releford as a possible '10 point guard signee.

I'm a huge fan of Pinkston. I find it hard to believe UT can't find a better option at the point than Releford.

Rivals only has him as a 2 star in football, but his offer list isn't bad. He would save a scholarship spot on one of the teams if he played both sports, which is always good.

I'd much rather him save a spot on the basketball side.

How much of that do you attribute to panic over Ramar's banishment and West's academic purgatory?
If they hadn't previously recruited Marques Johnson and Cordell Passley I would give them more of a break.

The thing is, even if Ramar had continued to develop and kept on the straight they's be woefully thin at the position.

Yeah, for whatever reason, PG recruitment has been horrendous for this staff. I say, "for whatever reason," because I can't finger why that one position sticks out for them. It seems like Bruce's style of play + the players he gets at other positions would = at least the occasional solid PG prospect.

A Selby article on Rivals mentions that UCLA is looking at Releford, FWTW. Florida and Oklahoma are also on his list.

Hat, do you have any insight on the two 3* guard prospects out of Memphis - Mardracus Wade and Terrence Durham? They both have the Vols listed. Could they help, and how likely is it that they end up in Knoxville?

Thanks.

Please name these elite players at other positions Pearl has or is signing.

I know enough about Wade to be confident he's a solid bench player at the SEC level. Haven't seen Durham at all so I wouldn't want to make an evaluation.

I didn't say "elite." I said "solid." Hopson, Tatum, Negedu, and Hall were all nice prospects. So is McRae. I just wonder why PG continues to be the one position they can't nail down.

While we're still up, allow me to throw another name who has UT on his list. I know Rivals isn't your favorite site, but anyway - that 7' center who is ranked #145 and is, based solely on his Rivals list, down to UT and Ohio State. David Nyarsuk of the Patterson School.

It seems like Matta would have the edge, with the run he's had of 7' centers. For UT, this could signal a change in philosophy, or perhaps the staff views him as an off-the-bench change of pace guy who can help us match up when necessary.

Is it realistic that this guy ends up in orange?

With Thomas and Sullinger already committed, why would Ohio State want Nyarsuk?

Like I said, I'm just going by the Rivals list. It doesn't say that either team has offered.

I wasn't being critical, I was just asking the question as a means to illustrate that UT has more playing time to offer. I talked to a coach who has evaluated Nyarsuk this afternoon. His opinion was comparable to mine: decent prospect who isn't a game changer.

Sounds right for a 7-footer who's only a 3*.

I just think this staff cannot evaluate talent all that well or end up recruiting the wrong players to fit Pearl's style. We got the length last year we were supposedly void of but then we could not wear teams down like we did the previous 2 years with shorter, quicker players. We won many of our games the previous seasons because of steals leading to easy layups. I just wish the staff would make up there minds and recruit players to fit whatever system they plan on running.
